Vancouver meet up??

I have seen a meet up for Calgary and Toronto but never for Vancouver yet. Would anyone be interested in this?

We had one once. 2008 I think it was.

Several attempts have been made since then, but nobody has the follow through to actually sort one out.

If it wasn't on a weekend, I would go to one, provided I had nothing else planned.

Seems trickier to get a Vancouver meet up sorted.....tricky bunch we seem to be....;)

Seems other cities seem to be able to organize one apart from this one lol I can do any time in the evenings or weekends although I think an evening would be better.

Them Okanagists are scared of the Coquihalla between September and July...personally I think its just an excuse for not going anywhere. There's always shopping - why leave the big shopping mall?

Where's that Jamie Davis? (a supplier of ours knows him well and says he's a dickhead, by the way...)

???
Yep, the Wagon train don't take kindly to them steep highways until them snows are long garn. I prefer to fly!;)

Sadly no trips planned before Christmas Tootle, we were there a few weeks ago learning some stuff and seeing the big lights of the big city... They have cars and buses and everything- sadly nowhere to stable the horses for the night:lol:

The hwys in winter can be miserable, why drive them unless absolutely necessary?

If I could afford to run a car here, I would drive any condition that is how much I miss driving that I am prepared to drive in snow :(

Maybe unlike Calgary or Toronto, not a lot of us live in metro Vancouver (house prices maybe the reason )

I've gone to Vancouver twice and tried to get BEer's to go for a drink and couldn't so don't count on easy success.

Perhaps you could entice them with one of your breakfasts. I'm sure Oink would be keen.

I guess I have met my quota of snow driving and just don't do it unless an absolute necessity, which for us going to the interior would never be and can always wait for better summer weather...

Maybe if we had a good snow car, but even with winter tires, Mazda 2's are not great in the snow and the one day we got last winter of snow, one thing was consistent, getting stuck because of low clearance to the ground.... Winter tires seemed to be of no help.

Plus considering how poorly our little car does climbing the hills on the sea to sky, I am not even sure I want to take up the Coq.....

Take Hwy 3 or the old Hwy 1, they're great.

I would.....I like the more scenic routes, and if I am taking a road trip, I take my time and stop along the way. But I just hate winter driving and snow, so I do my road trips in the summer...Won't venture far from the coast in the winter unless flying or taking the train.

I'm not crazy about driving through the mountains in winter either, and if I have to I try to time it so I go through the high passes in daylight. The Kootenay Skyway can have blizzards right until June.

I just see how poorly they take care of the Sea to Sky in the snow and ice which isn't good.... I don't feel confident in the province and other highways...lol

Thanks- phone snap
Well spotted re the plane- looks too high for a local one- they often come down over the lake to land in Kelowna- I bet that is a Vancouver bound plane from maybe Tronno?

Beautiful pic... How far is it from yours to Vancouver then?

Stinkypup Nov 22nd 2015 2:48 pm

Re: Vancouver meet up??

About 45-50minutes ... By plane
Car wise in good weather 4.5 hours - about 270 miles - I wouldn't bother once the temperature drops

Oh, and are you looking at my arse TT?! :sneaky:

JamesM is the master of setting them up here.

Pick a quiet time of year- never December.
Pick a date reasonably far in advance and stick to it
Don't worry too much about consensus. Obviously you want to choose a free date but you're going to get so many long winded stories about Aunty mabel being in town that weekend and bla bloody bla. Just look for Yes/ No.

The you just turn up yourself and hope someone else appears. (ideally take a friend or make an arrangement with one other BE'er who is a definite yes).

Ok so lets look at mid - late January, somewhere easy to get to - downtown Vancouver.

How does that sound?

I will just pick a date, time and location and take a Friend with me so I don't look like a loser when no one shows up

Yes be ruthless. Pick a date 6 to 8 weeks in advance.

They're not always a bed of roses.

Typically in Toronto we get 14 to 18 but on several occasions after a snow storm we got 3.

Last time out we had 5 and a half although to be fair we had several well attended earlier this year so the frequency has picked up and I suspect people were jaded.

Also in hindsight I didn't pick the most obvious thread title.

Yup. You can't please everybody. All you can do is give them enough time to sort their lives out.

I'm fortunate as I have next to no friends (for obvious reasons) and the well situated pub (transit access, highway access and hotel across the street) is 10 minutes from my office so it's an excuse to get drunk around a table every few months.

Because I can sit at the bar and drink alone quite happily attendance has never frightened me all that much.

Anyway you need us other folks to stop crashing your thread so Vancouverites get on it!

And of course the Hooters bar is never too far away from you ;)

I wish I could just sit at a bar on my own but it seems like it's still a it of a taboo thing for a lone female. People think she has been stood up on a date, is an alcoholic, a hooker or (in my case) a singleton the wrong side of 30 who must own 10 cats.

Great!!!

Do you have a preference for weekday evenings or weekends?

It will be good to put names to faces if I can pull this off

Weekday is easier simply because we have less going on, but weekends in the evening 6:30p or later is doable as well.
