I think the idea is you twizzle the spaghetti on the fork with the spoon as support....I only found this out when I shared a house with a posh bloke. It came in cans in my house as a kid.

So no sandwiches, crisps, chips, nuts, fruit, biscuits......??
You could get therapy. Bavarian?? I have some very good knives and forks made in Bavaria you mean they don't use them there? Sandwich -- yeah. hmmm. I tend to use my hands (and I actually use my hands most of the time) but still don't like it....(feeling guilty unless my hands are real clean) If it's possible, I wrap with something - napkin/foil/wrap. One of my Kiwi mates gotta laugh at it when he saw I wrap my sarnie with tissue towel  It was severe when I was younger but now (am 30) I no longer bother. crisp, chip, biscuit - sure I use hands. but I rarely eat those stuff. I don't eat much fruits chips -- I use fork. when I eat muffin, I wrap with foil (if at home) - cos I need to heat it up in the oven |

Is it just me or have you noticed that the majority of people in this country only seem to use a fork when eating a sit down meal?
The fork is always in their right hand and they sometimes use the side of it to cut things with as well. Only reason I'm asking is because my 5yr old has adopted this habit and I'm trying to explain to her the benefits of using both a knife and fork. We were invited to dinner a few months ago and were handed a plate of spaghetti Bolognese with only a fork?? My Wife and I looked at each other and were both too embarrassed to ask for a knife as no one else was using one. I struggle without a knife.. of course! |

that must be why my German MIL gave them to us. Mind you shes not Bavarian. She isnt very polite about Bavarians either. I went there once, Nuremberg, thats Bavaria I think.
Did I miss something - are Bavarians known for not using cutlery? I can't say I noticed that. The cutlery brand you might mean is WMF from the next state over, Baden Württemburg. |

It is, I used to live there. But they prefer to say it's in Franconia (Franken), they're not mad keen on the rest of Bavaria ;)

I am still puzzled about the Bavarians and cutlery! I used them when I was there, I spread the beef dripping with a knife. That was in a fancy restaurant in Nuremberg. Did you like living there?? |
Re: Using both a knife & fork when eating
fork and knife, evenfor spaghetti. The knife is used to twirl the spaghetti against, and generally to shove it in the direction of the fork.
that said, i'm a righty who eats like a lefty. |
