True but if your employer lays you off or you get sacked and hires a person with legal status then that is not illegal unless you can prove the lay off or sacking was illegal.

My main point is if an illegal worker took your job you would be outraged and complain because it directly affects you. If the illegal took somebody elses job say in Vancouver and you live in Toronto then chances are you dont really care.

Immigration is always going to be a vexed question, particularly if you are the one who loses his job.

Lots of Eastern Europeans came to the UK and undercut those from the indigenous population offering services such as plumbing. The fact that these guys, as EU nationals, were in the UK quite legally didn't stop cries of anguish from the Brits. Likewise, Canada's policy of allowing non Canadians into the country is bound to cause friction in a time of relatively high Canadian unemployment. Whether you are displaced by a 'legal' or an 'illegal' may be of little consequence when you can't meet the mortgage payments.

Well that is not likely to happen. Not that much illegal hiring goes on, and when it does go on, the one that is out of a job would probably not hear about it. They main point is that the employers who do hire illegally should be discouraged from doing so through the use of fines.

In this case it would push wages up because they are already in the economy and being paid very poorly. After they are made legal their wages will go up. New immigrants to an economy push wages down.
