Unexpected Bank Holidays

I've not been here long enough to get used to when all the public holidays are, in fact the only one I can actually remember is Canada day. Apparently it's BC day on Monday which, as I only found out about this today, makes the coming long weekend a very pleasant surprise.

Do bank holidays here catch anyone else out like this or does everyone know when the days off are coming up?

Re: Unexpected Bank Holidays

It's the civic holiday in Ontario, Saskatchewan Day here. I tend to refer to this one as the "We're not Quebec Day" as they get St John Baptiste in June and the rest get this one.

Remembrance Day in SK is the one I always forget about.

It's NB day too.

It kind of takes the excitement off having the same day as everywhere else.

I get UK ones only, so I'm always caught off guard when others in the house are off school/work.

Apparently it's John Simcoe day in Toronto. Sounds like it's fairly random across the country!

Re: Unexpected Bank Holidays

This coming wednesday we have, if we are lucky, St. John's Regatta day. It's a provincial public holiday for the St. John's rowing regatta (oldest continuously held sporting event in North America apparently...), but the rub is that the regatta only goes ahead if the weather is good. If the regatta is postponed so is the holiday. So, everyone wakes up early on Regatta day to find out whether they can roll over and go back to sleep or have to get up and go to work.

This year it's moot to me as I'll be in the Netherlands next week so will miss the holiday whichever day we have it. I'll be taking the following Monday off instead, somewhere in England.

Same here. I get the eight days I would get if I were in the UK. It's up to me to pick which ones I take. Souvette works in Ontario, so she doesn't get Quebec Day. I do but I don't bother unless she takes a day of vacation. Similarly, she gets next Monday but I don't. I'll take the day off if the weather is nice.

there's 11 a year in BC, although boxing day is optional. As a fed employee we get them all.

I do find that the start of the year through easter is a grind though with no holidays till easter.

The holiday this weekend in Alberta is a civic holiday so is optional for a lot of employers, however it would become a stat if it were negotiated as such in a union contract.

Did you spend your time visiting mosques? Because that's the only place you'll see a "high number of muslims" in BC.

If you are going to make mildly racist jokes about a visible minority religion you should at least pick one that has a decent showing around here. What about a Sikh holiday, or Budhist one?

How does one spot a Muslim, anyway? The only one I've met around here, to my knowledge, is called Terry and he's white.

Living in a place called Niverville MB, i would also guess education isn't high on the list of wants or needs, and non white immigrants are few and far between ;)

Oooooh according to stats canada, in 2006 Niverville had a population of 2455 with a total visible minority of 25.

It also shows 25% of the population between the ages of 25 and 64 do not have any form of education in the context of high school certificate, diploma or degree.

Arrogant, presumptive, and according to stats canada, correct
