If they get two seats, does that mean they get two meals as well?

Is having 2 seats a human right, probably not but it's a seat the airline were expecting revenue for. The most important issue to me would be that if the person has to take up 2 seats to fly, are they going to be able to use the emergency exits if required without holding up those who are behind them.

As for a handicapped person needing another seat for their companion - and now it's legislated that they get it free - I guess it depends on the level of the handicap. When my O/H was wheelchair bound, he made it on his own back to the UK and back again because the airlines are usually very helpful and provide lots of assistance to wheelchair passengers. So I'm not sure why the companion to a wheelchair passenger should fly for free. Oh well.

I think if an airline can specify the maximum size and weight of a cabin-bag that can safely fit in the cabin lockers, then surely it can specify the maximum size and weight of a person that can safely fit in its seats?
If you're over the maximum size/weight (imagine the frame, just like the frames to check cabin baggage!), then you would have to buy the extra seat as a sort of excess baggage.
Human rights, my arse.

Do they have to state their size when booking the seat????
What happens if the airline sells all the seats and there isn't a spare seat

I don't agree either. I am over weight, I should really lose about 30 lbs but I still think my weight problem is my responsibility. What is going to happen is that the airlines will pass on the cost of the extra seat(s) to all the other passengers and we will end up paying for this. Its what happens all the time. The airlines just pass all extra costs along to the passengers.
And, you have a really excellent point about getting through the exit doors, although I guess so long as the overweight person is not sitting on the outside, most of them don't move that fast so the rest could bail out first!
I think I would have a serious objection if I was sitting on the window side of a huge person, because it would restrict MY human rights in getting out of my seat wouldn't it??

If the aircraft is half full of people who take up two seats do the rest of the passengers have to pay more because of the drop in revenue

Can anybody apply for two seats on the grounds of being a bit on the large size?
If say you have a very poor body image of yourself and really belive that you are obese can you have two and have a very comfortable flight with lots of elbow room?

I'd like 2 seats please but I'm only paying for 1.
Check-in
Certainly sir, you are in seats 11a and 14f. Have a nice day!
Aside from the point about the emergency exits, how is someone needing 2 seats going to be able to fit into the washroom on a flight. Will they be required to wear a diaper?

I wonder what your average 35-stone glutton thinks when he is handed the little foil sachet with four peanuts in it?
