Toronto Maple Leafs new logo

So....the new logo is being revealed in about 20 minutes.

Supposed to be a 'significant' change, according to the news.

Thoughts? Comments?

Have you ever watched a hockey game?

To not bad. The previous one was definitely due an update.

And iced hockey is pretty good to watch, way better than the kicking ball, diving and crying championships.

Yes.

An ugly game with 3 halves.

All about the goal tender.

If they developed Hockey in Canada like they do in Europe to be about angles, hand skills and moving the puck it might be more interesting.

Instead we get physical brutes trained to smash into people at speed.

That's why despite Canada producing more hockey players than Europe combined it has such a poor record at a junior level.

Beer League Iced Hockey is palatable.

A mod should really close this thread. Iced Hockey is not pub banter at all.

True, but now they've eliminated fighting and checking from almost everywhere except the NHL it'll change.

Remember when soccer was all about hoofing it upfield, none of this continental fancy Dan rubbish?

So what do you think of the logo?

Indifferent.

If I was able to get tickets for the leafs and beer was $7 or $8 versus $18 then it might mean something to me.

It is an even sorrier sight at the Olympics.
Go watch a pro game at ice level [second mortgage available for tickets]. It is lots of things, including incomprehensible if you are not a fan, but dull it is not.

I was referring to the logo, which is extremely close to how it looked 1939-67, last century.

Post #2 has a link. I'm surprised how old the current logo is, must have looked pretty cutting edge in the 70s.

One medal in the last 4 years in WJH. Horrendous.

I get offered tickets at work to entertain clients. I'd rather relax at home and watch Netflix to be honest.

No atmosphere. Just other suits.

I prefer to think of it as seven medals [four gold] in the last ten years. Or 16 medals in the last 20? No other team even comes close to that.
But to be fair, it is a niche sport, unlike football.

That's the issue I have with much of Canadian sport. The skill level can be high, athletic ability world class, but most events I've attended have lacked any sustained passion or excitement.

I went to football match in Vancouver and most of the spectators were more interested in their nachos and hot dogs than the action on the pitch. It made for a rather detached atmosphere. I think an audience here would probably be more attentive at a monster truck rally.

I took my girlfriend (Cradle) to a Stoke match and she could not believe the atmosphere. This was on the stereotypical cold Tuesday night in Stoke and we played out a 0-0. The atmosphere was still 10 times better than anything I have seen in the vast majority of North American sports.

Its not just football though, I also support Warrington Wolves RL and the atmosphere at Super League and Challenge Cup games is also very good.

I dont really understand why they cant get an atmosphere going at Hockey - supposedly a religion in most of this country.

Yes. It's an embarrassing tally of medals however far one stretches it out.

If they aren't winning the gold medal every year with that volume of players they should take a long hard look at themselves and how the game is developed in this country.

Their performance this year was gutless and pitiful. The coaching staff and executive should be answering some tough questions.

A sport pretty much funded by Canada for a Canadian TV audience (game times scheduled accordingly) and 1 gold medal in the last 7 years.

TFC is not too dissimilar.

I'm wondering if it will pick up when the new roof goes on.

They don't really do chanting here and certainly nothing original, ironic or comical like down the Lane.

Basketball is the best professional sport to watch in Toronto.

Based Ball. Head south of the border.

American college football is great to watch live if you're at a university where they're good at it. I used to go regularly to Tennessee and Oregon games and the atmosphere is really fun. Of course 90% of the crowd is pissed up before kickoff, which helps. And of course Americans are much nicer to Brits than Canadians are, so they really make an effort to include you in any group dynamic.

I neither love nor hate it so I'm solidly behind the 'meh' movement. A lot of things are retro now and a lot of teams have retro-style uniforms they bring out for special games. I remember when the Leafs were great, and goalie Johnny Bower was a friend of us kids up in Prince Albert National Park at his ice-cream parlour.

I think there's a good atmosphere at some iced hockey games. I travelled for a while with a salesman who was a fan and we'd attend games wherever we were. Stand outs were Philadelphia (all the intermission videos were of great fights of the past), Boston, Detroit, the Cow Palace (Canada/US game) and Montreal. Only Philadelphia still had the same stadium so the teams in these cities may now suffer the same audience ennui that afflicted Maple Leaf Gardens and probably now applies wherever it is that the Leafs have gone.

I went a lot to MLG when I worked next door as I had time to kill and, once the game started, there were tickets at the kerb for less than the price of going for a beer. The trouble was that, although every game is sold out far into the future, the seats were sold to corporations who gave them away to clients or visitors from out of town. If you're not a keen fan then 10 minutes of iced hockey is enough to get the idea and, after that, the viewers wander off.

The Leafs business model seems sound, the revenue stream is assured so they keep costs down by not troubling to field competitive sides. Merchandising is important so they rejig the shirts now and then. I admire it as a business but I think it's too obviously a cynical strategy to inspire crowd enthusiasm.

I've heard the Rock are an excellent view. (Lacrosse) and cheap to get in to boot.

The leafs games I went to reminded me of Man U- corporate bullshite. Not a patch on Brisbane Road.

The main attraction in watching the Habs at the moment is seeing how much worse things can get. Going from 1st in the league to 23rd in two months takes some doing.

I can envisage a new version of the Gordie Howe hat trick coming up.

It would actually be in Montreal's interests now to keep losing.

I hadn't even spotted that, but thinking about it the silence from the Habs fans in my circle has been deafening.

Looking at the power rankings there's a depressing amount of Canadian teams from 20-30. My Canucks still have borderline playoff ambitions thanks to a weak divisions and are ranked around 23. Thinking back to 2011

Pub Osmosis. I now know stuff about basketball that even eye-bleach cannot cure.
