Anyone been? HID wants to go for a few days but tbh I can't see the point. Can anyone help? Its probably going to cost $2500 for the four days, which in itself not that bad until you realize you could do all the same stuff here but better. Restaurants are better here, the shops are better here, you can go to the pictures and you won't lose internet signal. Plus you don't have to drive 8 hours to get there. And iirc it's not like the ferry rides are fun, I don't think they even have bars let alone a casino onboard. I'm struggling to the see the appeal. If you want the solitude of sitting on a cold windswept beach and having seagulls shit on your head, you can do that here without the hassle of a rubbish journey.

Is there something I'm missing about going to Tofino that Canadians somehow see?

Bear watching - I do know you do love seeking the non aquatic wildlife, it would be like a dream come true.:cool:

I love Tofino, don't know why- cold and windswept beach, head covered in birdshit, getting pissed on by the rain - still nowhere like it IMO- you are supposed to treat HID like a princess , it is Valentines, get your lazy ass over to the Island and live a little, away from the bright lights and the exotic dancers

You can fly if the ferries are not your thing. A couple of airlines fly from the South Terminal at YVR to Tofino, but they are small like 8 passenger planes.

KD Air and Orca did in the past, not sure if either are still around.


The only upside to Tofino I can tell is the ocean and the scenery can be nice, but the costs to get there, stay there, and time it takes really makes it a hard destination to choose.

We almost got married there, but it would have been about double the cost vs Vegas, so we went to Vegas instead, plus the aquarium wedding way better then a beach wedding....:lol:


Side note about flying, the summer I worked at YVR South terminal, the Tofino flights were delayed a lot because of fog....


It is on my bucket list to visit at least once.

I've seen more orcas than one would ever want. Unfortunately when they turn up the fish naff off, plus they stink. I did mention Hawaii as at least the fishing would be good, but she's pretending to be worried about the zika virus but I suspect its more about trying to get me to visit other bits of Canada. :thumbdown:

She's now come up with antiquing. wtf is that all about? You want to buy old stuff go on eBay. There must something more to this to make cheap Canadians splash our $400 a night on a seaside hotel room. Its not like its Scarborough. :(

Apparently antiquing is similar to swinging but you have to pair up with seniors- they throw their false teeth into a bowl rather than car keys and you youngsters pick a set and see who will be your squeeze for the evening before they retire to sleep with their Horlicks:cool:

Go when the weather is better, Oink. As far as I saw, people like to imagine there is a surf culture there, but there is a definite tourist vibe.

I'm just trying to find out what the appeal of this place is? She once convinced me to to visit Saskatoon (the Paris of the Prairies :rofl:), what an utter dump of a place. It was dreadful. So, I'm just a little sceptical. I'm not much a fan of Vegas but at least you can get a decent steak and a good drink at a reasonable price.

Seegulls won't shit on your head. There's too much space. They do that in Scarborough as well as attack people.

I think storm watching at the Wickaninish Inn is popular at this time of year. There isn't much to do unless your into that, surfing, whale and seal watching, native art galleries or walking along the surf.

If you tell her you won't do it she'll be sad and you'll eat birdseed and spinach pulp for a week, buy a nice bunnyhug (hoodie) with Tofino on it while you're there.

I know quite a few people like it. They think of it as a good tourist destination.

As you would probably know, that really depends on taste. From memory, when I visited, it felt like a small touristy type area which offers kayaking, whale watching, a few restaurants offering seafood and steak, and a self professed "surf crowd".

It's a ferry across and then a drive - I'm sure there are many videos you can see which might give you a better sense.

Internationally, it wouldn't be on my list, but for VI, well it's OK. I also would prefer to go when it's sunny, but that's just me.

Have a good trip if you go and if you get desperate you can always go for a beer and oysters.

Can't you take your own boat over to Parksville, then catch a bus to Tofino, and bring the cost down a bit. Discover your inner hippy, as that's the kind of place Tofino used to be. As you say, most activities can be better had in Vancouver, but if you can see Tofino without sinking too much dosh, it might be worth it.

I know I sound like an old pair of grumpy knickers but that's not really my position, its just that I already ready live in a good tourist destination where I can get decent beer and oysters, plus I can play xbox while lying in a king size bed.

Firstly its not really about the cost, secondly my tank holds 700L of fuel of which I'd easily use all of that going there and back so given that marine fuel is about 50 cents a litre more than regular petrol I could fly there three or more times for that price. :lol:

I'm thinking of just telling her to go with mum and dad, might just be best for us all. :thumbup:

I maybe a git but I'm not really miserable, in fact I'm generally considered to be effusively charming and congenial its just that its an established fact that nearly all of Canada is a complete shithole.

I'm sure its really good just not really my cup of tea so to speak. Haida Gwaii on the other hand is meant to have brilliant fishing but sadly its not the season yet. :(

February in Tofino? Nope. It is windy, grey and somewhat grim in August, cannot imagine what it is like in Feb. If you do go, beware the tippy whale watching boats....

That's what I thought. If she wants a change of scenery I'd of thought a weekend at The Four Seasons would be okay. At least there's a decent bar downstairs.

Fully aware of tippy whale watching boats as we used the 1998 one as a case study for part of a Transport Canada boating course.
