Default Toddler with large Adenoids....

Hi

We arrived in Victoria 4 months ago, overall we are loving it, though personally it has been much harder emotionally than I thought leaving home. anyway we have just found out that our daughter who is two and a half needs to have her adenoids out.

Its a relief in a way as neither her or I have has a proper nights sleep since we got here as her breathing is so bad but I'm a bit worried as I'm not familiar with the hospitals etc yet.

So far I been impressed with the consultant.

Anyone else had any hospital treatment here? anyone had their children operated on? any advise? (she will be staying at Victoria)

I know I'm probably worrying to much but you know us Mums can be like.....

I neither live in Victoria nor have a toddler so am about as qualified as Paris Hilton is to do brain surgery regarding this - however - from what I have read on here don't recall any posters having less than glowing reports of hospitals / staff / docotors.

So try and relax and know that she feel 100% better after its all done and you'll all get a good nights sleep!

Not the same province either but our family has had nothing less than excellent hospital experiences in Quebec and New Brunswick.

We are Canadian so I can't compare to what you're used to, but here in SW Ontario, my son had a very good experience with having his tonsils and adenoids out at age 4. He had very bad apnea since birth, though we didn't know it, and the surgery was like an overnight miracle.
Here, the hospital has a child specialist on staff where they take the kids through a mock operation on a doll and they spend some time decorating their mask and whatnot. They practice counting for the anesthetic and put pinwheels on the gurneys while they ride. It was a positive experience for both of us. Good luck to your little one and make sure they drink enough fluids in the days after the surgery.

My brother had his adenoids out when he was about 3 or 4.

This was in the UK in the early 1970s, so we can assume that Victoria in the 21st Century must be at least on a par with 1970s NHS standards, if not better, so I'm sure your little one will be in safe hands.

My brother is now 40 years old, and has seemingly made a full recovery, with no ill effects from the operation, apart from some impaired judgement in choosing hairstyles and spouses.

If I remember correctly, ice cream was the key to his post-surgical rehabilitation.

hi,
We live in Victoria and my son had his adenoids out and tubes (grommets) inserted when he was 5. It was a few years ago, but the hospital and ENT Dr were all great, no complaints!
My other son had it done in Portsmouth when we were there, and there was no difference in care, couldn't really fault either .
It is very quick low risk day surgery. The difficult part is keeping them from eating or drinking before you go!
It will all be fine. As a Mum we do worry, its what we do!

I had my adenoids and tonsils removed in 1977. In contrast, crisps and cold cereal were the recipe for my recovery. I had to eat hard foods twice a day. This was the start of a crisp addiction which has significantly affected my lifestyle (and waistline) to this very day...

I can still remember the pain. I think it hurt for about the first four or five days..... These days I can't really understand why that was recommended, given that everyone else I've heard of was told to eat ice cream....
