I'm thankful for being able to skype friends in faraway places when the baby's up all night.

I'm bloody thankful we did thanksgiving yesterday and so don't have to go through it all today. Such a FAFF and still have enough turkey left to sink a battleship

I believe that Thanksgiving day is on the Sunday. You can have your dinner whenever you want!

Many seem to have their dinners on the Sunday, but the Monday is the actual holiday, people just need to be back to work Tuesday, so lots have it on Sunday and make Monday the travel day to be back to work Tuesday.

Overall it doesn't seem to be as big a holiday here as it is in the US but they have theirs in November, today is Columbus Day there which isn't really much of a holiday except for banks and government employees.

We are having ours today, first time I have done a Thanksgiving in Canada in the 10 years I have been here, or 11, I think its 11 years now...lol anyhow its not too much work, but we have a small gathering, just 4 people. I have no family in Canada, and my partner is first generation Canadian so only her mom and brother family wise here, but her brother lives on the Island, so he never comes over, so easy peasy dinner, and lots of turkey for me. I need an excuse to make a turkey....

Got the turkey free too, I knew 11 years of saving points at Save On would pay off..

!! I planned on "doing" Thanksgiving for the 1st time in nearly 10 years yesterday. The 'boys' buggered off to a party in the city at the last minute Saturday, & are only now rolling back Oop North; daughter worked.

I heaved a sigh of despair/relief, froze several tons of turkey dinners for future care packages, poured a glass of whine & turned the music up loud

Default Re: Thanksgiving.

as regular as clockwork we did ours on Sunday. Immediate family - five of us in total

A small 8Ib Turkey @$0.79/Ib from Walmart, mashed potatoes, carrot & turnip, sprouts, home made stuffing & cranberry sauce. We reckon per serving (excluding the leftover Turkey) it cost less than $2/person. No booze or dessert, just cups of tea

The remainder of the Turkey (already cut up ready) we'll eat (just the two of us) in various ways over the next several days, balance will be into soup, divided up portions & frozen

Christmas will be a repeat

That's a good deal on the turkey, cheapest around these parts was 2.38 per pound. Wal-Mart isn't allowed to really have groceries in this town, so no super deals like that.

I got a 9 pound bird, used my points I have been saving for the last decade for it.....

East Van Walmart does groceries and fresh produce.

We had our dysfunctional orphan and adoptee dinner for 10.

Way too much food!
Guy Fawkes is the next do!

Yeah I used to go to that one, North Vancouver has food too.

We have an older style Wal-Mart compared to lower mainland stores, this one is pretty crummy overall.

Food wise they don't sell anything fresh, no produce , no fresh meats, no bakery.

The town has some sort of bylaw that restricts the type of food Wal-Mart can sell which is mostly junk food, and frozen processed foods, along with canned stuff.

1/2 the floor space dedicated to food stuffs is junk food candy, chips, cookies, soda and such.

I wish we had a real Wal-Mart here, maybe prices would go down. The 2 best stores in town are owned by the same parent company, so prices almost identical to one another.

The other is a Loblaw owned store, but they have small store, poor selection, and prices not any cheaper, so I avoid there.

We had our usual family gathering for Sunday lunch. Turkey, roast potatoes (can't get my head around the Canadian obsession with mash), carrots, parsnips, Brussels sprouts, peas (for the poor benighted fools who don't like sprouts), bread sauce, cranberry sauce, sage & onion stuffing, sausagemeat stuffing, gravy..... This is one of my contributions to the culinary life of the household, so I tend to go a bit overboard! It was warm and sunny so we decided to eat al fresco, and pimped out the table on the deck for the occasion; then eventually got up and took the dog out for a brisk walk to burn off some of the excess calorific intake.

As usual the turkey was much too large for immediate requirements, so yesterday I made a huge vat of turkey curry, which will keep me going for lunch at work into some time in the next century, and made several pints of stock from the carcass that SWMBO will convert into delicious soups through the autumn.

Seems fishy to me.
