Default The Super Bowl Thread

Yes. It is that time of year where us Canadian's make plans to watch the spectacle laid on by our southern cousins.

Last year I went to a pub got drunk, won $120 on a game of squares. Went to several more pubs and was particularly blurry eyed the next day only surviving work for several hours.

This year I'm at a friends place eating chilli and trying to avoid alcohol.

I put it to you, joe public, how will you be spending your Super Bowl Sunday?

Avoiding Booze? Hmm, I think someone has had their account hacked

I'm actually in buffalo this weekend, and I suspect I'll be subjected to this Super Bowl thing. Plus side is, coming home from there will be quiet due to the bowlfest.

The day will start off with me watching the Chelski V Man Utd game 1030 EST.
After that and depending on the result I might do the Coronation St catch up.
If the phone rings during the day and anyone invites me over to watch it I will consider it. Otherwise I might watch parts of it or fall asleep on the couch.
Hopefully this is the last year for Canadians watching on regular cable TV to have to suffer with Crappy Tire and Tim Hortons adverts if watching it on the US channel.
Im not bothered who wins though I did enjoy my time in Denver.

Instead of watching American Throwball you could watch a real sport - Its the opening weekend of the Super League season.

Bollocks to that. It's also the opening weekend of the Six Nations Championship. France-Italy and Scotland-England on Saturday, Ireland-Wales on Sunday. Proper rugby

BBC streams for the Saturday games, ITV for Sunday's. Unless anybody knows if the RTE player works with MediaHint? I've never tried it, but in case the BBC or ITV feeds flake out it'd be good to have a backup.

Yes indeed. I watched the Leeds-v-Warrington game last night my time. Excellent stuff. But I enjoy the slow-mo US derivative of Rugby League too. It still shows signs of where it originated. Mind you, League has changed a lot in the past fifty years since I was a fan in my boyhood!

The Super League was at the front of my mind as it was the first game of the Season last night and more games tonight. Wigan v Catalan kicks off in about half an hour

I used to have Sportsnet World but now most Premier League games are on TSN and normal Sportsnet.

If I have an upswing in earnings at any point it may come back.

I watched the first half then had to go to bed but taped it. I am a Warrington fan. Good result last night. They already look better than last year and I am hoping for a much better season this year. There were quite a few handling errors by the wire in the first half - that was a problem that plagued us last season. Leeds are still a quality side despite losing the trio of old hands.

I find that American throwball is over structured and I just find it a poor relation of Rugby.

Do you support any particular team? I also started following the Canterbury Bulldogs in the NRL last year as it was the only RL on the telly and had to make do with watching Warrington online.

That is true. The main advantage is the Rugby. They do show FA cup, Jock League and Bundesliga games as well.

I am wondering when this new pick and mix tv thing comes how many channels I will actually keep. Between the Sports and a choice few others I really dont watch much TV.

OK, I should probably have added another appropriate smiley to that (as well as the tongue-sticking-out one at the end of the line).

I mean, I've got nothing against the thirteen-man code, I love the fast pace of the game (almost like sevens at times) but the whole last-pass thing forcing a lot of predictable kicking downfield is just a little bit too much like the 4th-down punting or field goal nonsense that breaks up a gridiron game. A dozen years ago, for sure, Union games too often descended into big piles of people in endless rucks and mauls, a very static game. But with (by and large) very successful tweaking of the rules, modern 15-man rugby is - moreso now than the League code - an open and flowing game; I'd rather watch the multiple phases of recycled ball and open running rugby than a player taking the ball into the tackle to win a play-the-ball and gain another few yards before the stand-off kicks for territory. All in my not-terribly-well-supported-by-evidence-but-strongly-held-nonetheless opinion, of course

Edited to add: there wasn't a "I might watch it for a bit if I'm in the same room as the telly with nothing else to do" option on the poll. "Meh" would have served, too.

I agree mostly with what you say. I think that over the last 10 years or so there has been a lot more players crossing the floor in both directions so each code has benefited. I think it depends a lot on which team or competition you are watching with regard to being open and free flowing. There are plenty of teams that still like to bog it down with the forwards.

Super league is playing catch up in terms of attacking flair when compared to the NRL but that gap will continue to close as more money comes into the game. As far as the last tackle goes I think that the added pressure to do something with the possession means more tense situations and more excitement. There are plenty of teams that will kick on the 4th or even 3rd tackle.

Just my opinion and as I said I like both codes
