Re: Summer Holiday Plans
I did a road trip out east in July 2011 with my then girlfriend, it was a fantastic holiday, would love to do it again some day, but think id stop over in Quebec City on the way as id love to see that place.
I drove from Peterborough to Halifax non stop, left Thursday 9pm (so id be in Montreal in the early hours) and arrived in Halifax at 5pm Friday evening at a pre booked b&b. 20 hours non stop! what was even more amazing now when i think back is; we got to our room, showered and changed and went out for dinner and stayed out until 2am partying! cant believe we did that! lol We squeezed quite a bit into our 10 day vacation; Halifax, Cape Breton, Baddeck, Peggy's Cove, Louisbourg, Cabot Trail even PEI for a day and night. Weather was terrible for the most part - but was still a fantastic trip, some great memories. Lovely part of the world. |

If you are planning to do that, you may wish to consider continuing east to the Black Hills. If you plan the route carefully, you can take in the Battle of Little Bighorn and also see Mount Rushmore. If you are at all into "western" history there is lots to see and the scenery is fantastic.

Re: Summer Holiday Plans
Heading to New Zealand at the end of June. OH has tickets for the Lions tour! 3 weeks mainly on the South Island, but with a trip to Wellington for the Rugby!
If anyone has suggestions for places to visit in the NZ winter we'd appreciate it! |
Re: Summer Holiday Plans
I am thinking about maybe taking a float plane from Vancouver to Victoria and spend a day there and then fly back in the evening. Never been on a float plane and I think it would be kind of fun. Prices are pretty reasonable as well.

Going to book everything in advance as it will be in June and as the schools will be out it might be tricky to find somewhere. We got stuck with a weird motel once so it's made us wary.
Unless you have something planned for Moncton, I'd push on to NS or do the PEI thing. Might feel like a long journey, though, unless you're sharing the driving. |

How many dogs does it cost per night? You could pick up dogs for free off Kijiji so it would make a cheap stay in PEI if they accept dogs;)

Really? What about the Bay of Fundy?
Which places would you recommend we stay? If you want even more Fundy action, follow the bay around through the Maitlands and look for adventure there. Tidal bores and reverse river flows can be seen in a few locations (Truro can be a little underwhelming). Halifax is pretty small for a city but nice enough. Big boardwalk there, cruise ships, casino, theatres, the citadel. If you stay in the city, expect an additional $20 parking fee at the hotel per night. I've had stays in many of the city, Bedford and airport hotels and they all seem to have their pros and cons. Lunenburg and Peggys Cove are the must-do tourist day trips. Peggys Cove is a bit of a "tourist conveyor belt" but you're expected to visit if visiting NS. (It's possible that many of those that visit Peggys Cove to see the light house, are completely unaware of Swissair flight 111, or the frequency that people get washed off the rocks there.) If you have the time, spend a full day at Kejimkujik national park, or go for lunch and wander at Annapolis Royal. |

For Fundy, Parrsboro (and Partridge island). Check out Five Islands provincial park on the way to Halifax. Time your visits with the tides, as seeing some of those areas at low tide, then later at high tide, is obviously a big part of the Fundy experience. Be prepared, as it can be very windy on the shores.

Re: Summer Holiday Plans
I'm definitely not a proponent of NB / Moncton but from experience the best place to see the Bay of Fundy is definitely Hopewell Rocks followed by a trip to Alma and the Fundy Park, especially if you do the two visits to HR to see high and low tide. It is definitely worth taking the time, then heading straight for Halifax / Peggys Cove.

Re: Summer Holiday Plans
This thread has made me really envious.
We're already booked to go to Gibraltar and the UK this year. But I'm definitely going on summer hols to the Maritimes next year! |

Re: Summer Holiday Plans
Oink you make me laugh!
I'm going to Gibraltar because I have distant relatives there and no close relatives anywhere except husband/kids in Canada. Maritimes: I went to Halifax for about 48 hours last year and thought it would be nice for a holiday. Niagara was great (went to a conference in Toronto in 2015) but I got wet. I would take an umbrella next time if I went to the Falls. |
Re: Summer Holiday Plans
Could someone explain the fascination with the low and high tide aspect for me please.
I've seen Weston super Mare at high tide when you can walk into the sea and low tide when you can walk for miles through sludgy, soggy sand to get into the sea. I vaguely recall a couple of other places in England where high tide can cut you off if you're not careful but I wouldn't call experiencing both to be an advantage. |
