Which subject would be least welcome at your dinner table?

Please note that like all dinner table conversations, this poll is private.

The subject been inflicted on you over Christmas?

The first three of those come up regularly at the dinner table and often in the same sentence.

I can cope with all of them, hockey included.

I could certainly do without discussions of medical conditions, though.

Not at the dinner table, no.

But, as time goes by, those will be less unacceptable. Trust me.

All of the above.

I hold very strong views on religion and politics, being a humanist leftie who apparently needs to go and live on a commune somewhere, so I can get a bit heated (prob not a good dinner party guest) :)

Now being a staff nurse, married to a doctor, I'm really not averse to a medical discussion.

Conservation instead of conversation in the poll question.

I rely too heavily on the wiggly red underline.

Ah yes, wiggly lines...You have picked me up in the past on my lack of observation of wiggly lines...

Maybe you just wanted to be conservative rather than converse?

Not in mine. How can anyone but an idiot discuss complex issues with any depth or accuracy while "getting a bit heated?"

Ah thanks Bats......pretty soon my social life is going to drop to zero!!!;)

We're having a New Years Eve Dinner party (said in my best posh voice) with my closest friends- no politics or religion, we're doing a quiz... We're on pictures!

Because I don't expect to be able to change the world, just my little bit of it, and if the person doesn't happen to share my pov I might get passionate/ heated discussing it. Not sure in depth discussion of any of the three make you a good dinner guest. Might not get another invitation...

Very well indeed thank you.

On Boxing Day we had the pleasure of having just around the corner neighbours who, in 20 years living here, we'd never met or been aware of.

My number one son is mates with their son and has been to their house many a time. He told us we had a lot in common, so we invited them for a blind date.

One of the things we have in common is that the man involved is a Geordie and as ever, was well educated, erudite, very well travelled and articulate.

The four of us (plus our son, so the five of us) hit it off spectacularly well while indulging in overconsumption of rather good wines and HID's brilliant cooking.

I'm not sure we discussed rock 'n' roll, but sex and drugs came up after the trou normande.

Also 'iced'

It's not 'iced hockey', it's 'ice hockey' - and in Canada, just 'hockey'.

:p

Nor mine. Serious topics over dinner? How gauche. Although I'll make an exception this evening as I shall provide some analysis of today's darts thrillers to the missus as we finish off the last of the xmas left overs.

I have been in Canada since 2000, long enough to know the correct terms, lol.

It really irritates me when people refer to it as 'iced hockey' - just as it irritates me when Canadians make reference to 'field hockey'.

I supposed I must be betwixt and between 2 cultures!

:p

That's not what he meant. Iced hockey is something of a BE meme. There are some who say it's used to patronize cradles but they are wrong. It's used to annoy the expats who say it's used to patronize the cradles. Or maybe both.

Ah.. I just thought that some of my esteemed BE'ers were just not that bright when it came to hockey, lol, as I see it written on BE as such countless times.

In retrospect, maybe I was right all along.. :p

Sorry, I've been watching Netflix and then an interesting TVO thingy about Manet (a dead french painter). Died of a nasty case of syphilis at age 51 I hear.

Serves him right, IMHO.

But likely not acceptable as a dinner table conversation back then.

Siouxie, sometimes word association helps. Try searching the terms iced hockey cappuccino.

We watched an Arena programme, Sister Wendy and the Art of The Gospels.. Also interesting and combining religion and art. Sex was mentioned but only in a chaste way.

I love Sister Wendy.

I can cope with sex, drugs rock and roll and God at my table, but NOT Sport...it all leaves me totall iced!

It also depends, 'who' the guest is, if they are thick as plank, right wing racist bigots and humourless with it, you just know it's going to end in tears...I have had some of those to dinner and not known till too late...Ouch! Also, big generalization here, but...Canadians are so desperate not to offend that it can be difficult to get an form of juxtaposition going, they just agree with you:confused:

Tirytory I will keep a seat warm for you, sounds great fun...just think I could discuss all of my latest pains

Proselytising sentimentality can be entertaining though.

Its much easier and more satisfying the other way round. Plus, who has people round for dinner? Most people would be at work and on a weekend, down the pub. My nan would have her mates from the bingo round for a late tea but that was about it.
