Stinky- end of an era

3 Attachment(s)
Very sad day in the Stinkypup/Snoopdawg household yesterday when we had to say goodbye to our beautiful old boy Stinky. He had reached an amazing age, 12 3/4 which is good in Golden retriever terms and amazing given his really bad hips- he was an amazingly strong dog but was clearly suffering and we had to relieve that suffering.

He had a great life, was immensely loved by us all and tears are still being shed profusely and we will deeply miss him. He won't actually mind me telling you his real name now- it was Jake- the plan was to get another boy who was to be called Elwood but as he had to have major hip surgery at 9 months we felt it wasn't fair to get another one under the circumstances. That last photo was taken with him spending an hour before going to the vet in the sun- I think it shows him off well

Thankfully we are heading off to the UK today- at least for now it will get us away from little reminders like soft toys/stuffies that he adored since he was a pup. Sorry about the sentimental post, he was an old dog but it still hurts like hell :(

I so know how painful this is. Its a very hard time, saying goodbye to a loved family member.
I am glad you have the trip to distract you a little and of course time will help heal but right now I would like to say that I am very sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

But you let him go when he was suffering too much.

Safe trip, and enjoy it as much as you can, come back refreshed.

There's an old thread on here somewhere which I started in such circumstances.

I know exactly how you're feeling. Condolences.

My condolences - it's never an easy decision, but it's heart-wrenching to see them suffer, so I'm sure that you made the right, although difficult, choice.

I'd like to think that, far into the future, when it comes to leave this world and move on, that Jake will be waiting for you on that bridge, his ears perked, his tail wagging, as he looks forwards to facing the next adventure with you, side-by-side.

My condolences as well, I used to show Irish Setters and at one time had 8 of them, I stopped showing and let them live out their lives with me, it was heartbreakingly sad when the final one died, it was sad about the rest as well, but the last one going was the end of an era for me.

I'll add mine to the many other condolences. I remember Novo's and a couple of other previous similar threads, I'm sure the number of "been there, done that" comments let you know you're not alone, but don't ease the pain any.. RIP Jake/Stinky.

I like the idea that the next one should actually be called Stinky. ;)

Sorry for your loss.

I remember putting down a golden retriever because of stomach cancer 15 years ago.

Phenomenal family members.

Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.

So sorry for your loss. Our pets are family members and we love them with all our hearts. Heck I used to cry for days when one of my hamsters died!

So sorry about Jake's passing. He was a beautiful boy and I'm sure he will be missed tremendously.

I'm with the others who say if/when you get another he should be called Stinky. It's a great name.

Thankyou so much everyone for your lovely posts as well as pms, we really appreciate it- he isn't our first, we have lost other Goldens but you kind of forget how tough it is. Then we met Clifford at Calgary airport so he got a damn good pat !

No matter how many times you go through it, it never gets any easier. He had a wonderful life and gave so much pleasure to you guys, and even to us in cyber land. Sad day. :(

So sorry your Jake is gone. As others have said it's a difficult decision to make, but sometimes there is no real choice. Sympathy to all of your family.

I sometimes think that I have counted my life score in the number of well loved animals I have loved and lost! It has been a rich and rewarding life...I'm so sorry that you are feeling sad, but I'm not sorry that your dog had a spoiled life in the midst of a loving family!

I always hope that if I lead a good life, I might come back as an animal that is loved...no chance probably....

But hugs anyway:starsmile:

Oh hell. That's made my eyes leak for him and for you all .

Those photos are so fab and the last one is very special.

He had the very best with you and you with him. a perfect match & yes, it was perhaps time to let him go with love but really we just want them to go on forever don't we.

Stinky was very much a part of BE . I'm heartbroken for you . I kinda feel you both had a special bond.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your best friend. I got the impression you had a special bond with Stinky.

I know from experience just how heartbreaking it is to lose a furry friend. (((HUGS)))

Oh noooooo... so sorry to hear that you lost your bestest furry friend, I know how hard it is...

I like to think that Jake the Stinky will be frolicking around with all our beloved animals having a whale of a time and will welcome you with a lick, a tail wagging and a paw when you meet again.

Big hugs for you all.

It's so easy for so many of us to fully empathise with you at this time. Many of us have been there, done that, some including myself, more than once. My little guy, Nike, my soul mate is twelve going on thirteen. He's my third Border Collie, one after the other, over forty years now. Like the previous poster I am only to well aware he has more years behind than ahead. In the past I have, on the sad demise of my little guys, said to myself " never again"....Only to last a really short time before introducing another little black and white wonder into my life. They give us their all, much more than we can ever provide them. That's why it hurts so much when we loose them....But they would not change the life that they had with us....And that, at least I find great comfort in. I hope you do too.

Oh bloody bloody hell. I'm sobbing like an idiot. Goodbye Jake, you're a beautiful doggy and have had the best life with your lovely family. I'm so sorry Stinkypup, the pain is enormous

My 12 and a half year old goldie just put his big boof head in my lap because I'm crying and he's trying to make me feel better but it just makes it worse.
