Re: Speaking of crappy engagement stories
Spend what you feel comfortable spending. Or maybe talk to her and see what she wants.
If my boyfriend went out and spent 8k+ on a ring for me I would be shocked and would not feel comfortable wearing it. Instead, I went and picked out my own ring with a budget that I felt comfortable with 1k. I ended up picking out a ring for 2.5k, but that was only because it was exactly what i wanted and I fell in love with it.

It's a crock of shit. Women can't really expect every second of their boyfriends labour for three months to go on a ring - i.e. everyday the only reason he is getting up and going to work for what will turn out to be nearly double that time is to either pay taxes or buy some crappy jewellery that is worth less than a twentieth of what they are charging for it in the shop. This is before food, rent, etc and assumes the hapless guy has paid cash - if they've used a credit card then it's even worse.
Women who believe this kind of thing is appropriate (fortunately I don't think there are very many) need to ask themselves how many hours of their future husbands time (after tax) are they asking for. Even one week is actually quite selfish when you think about it - but three months? ffs, get some bloody perspective.

Neither do I..most of my friends have better things to spend their (& by that the thinking is the joint savings by then) money on - house, furniture, wedding, honeymoon..in fact often as long as a wedding ring of some sort is available, the engagement ring is often such a low priority as to be missed completely..
