Snow removal on an acreage / long drive.

How do you guys do it?
We got back from holidays to a foot and a half of snow and it neccesitated getting the old tractor out.
I'm seriously considering a shovel for the front of the quad because I can't cope with the armstrong steering on the tractor!!!!!!! Reccomendations of anyone whose gone this route welcome.
Or do you call in a neighbour to do it for you??????
I think a snow blower is pointless and shovelling makes me realise I smoke too much.

Does your truck have enough nuts about it to attach a plough ? For 18" of snow you will still have a bit of messing around to do but at least you are in the warm truck doing it

Pay to have it ploughed?
I do know of someone who leaves the car at the road end of the drive and walks the rest of they way. Not much fun with groceries.

It's not unusual for people to leave the car at the road and use a snowmobile to reach it from the house. That's probably easier if you don't have to dress for work.

Just actually looked at the prices of the plow and may actually invest in one myself for next year, no more expensive than a mid range snowblower (around 1500 for a half decent 1 )
Will dig around after the snow goes and see if I can pick up one of this winters models on sale

They work great as block heaters too.

we have a guy who comes round with a tractor and plough to do our drive - he does most of the houses round here.
long term, it would probably be cheaper to invest in a plough for our truck, but cos hubby works offshore it is one less thing for me to have to worry about doing when he's away.

Hubby works away and so takes the truck with him (selfish pr**k I say!!!!) when he's home he's the one using the tractor to do the snow removal. I have a little ol red car I use which is as suggested above now parked at the end of the drive should I need to go out anywhere.
Suspected as much with the answers but was really hoping there may be a "oh you can clear loads with a blade on a quad" reply - seems not
Mexico was great Rich - thought about posting pics on the "what was the last photo you took" thread - but seeing as a) they weren't and b) Canadas cold and Mexico was hot thought it might not go down too well

If the snow is dry and fairly light you can do some decent damage with the quad bike blade - if its wet and heavy its a bit of a different ball game

Mandy, I've recently started using a quad and blade on a 15ft drive. It works pretty well, but so did the walk behind snowblower I also have. For your location what you need is a truck and a plow. If Hubby has taken the F250 and 8ft Western V blade with him, then get him to invest in an old plow truck and blade that sits around for 8 months of the year looking rusty. That's they way it's done by many round here. Doesn't have to be licenced or indeed road legal.

We live on a shared private road with 4 other houses (driveways are around 350ft) & our share of the plow bill comes in at around $2,000 a year!
Being a moronic Londoner I'd not even thought about snow removal & gritting when we bought the house so we're stuck..
