Why is it that when I mention the names Cliff Thorburn, Kirk Stevens and/or Alain Robidoux to a Canadian they look at me blankly? Ask any Brit over the age of 35 and they'll be sure to say that they watched the first televised 147 break etc.

No.

"The first televised 147 was made by Steve Davis in the 1982 Lada Classic. In 1983, Cliff Thorburn became the first player to make a maximum break at the World Championships."

It was indeed the first on TV. One of the most tallented/boring men in "sport"

I loved watching the snooker in that era.

There was another thread on snooker not so long ago. However, its always worth mentioning Big Bill Werbeniuk. A fine example of a proper sportsman - something for all Canadians to aspire to

"He acquired a medical certificate which approved his beer-drinking, and became the envy of every armchair viewer when it was explained that he could offset the cost of beer against income tax."

I believe it was he who had a doctor's note saying he had to drink beer while playing.

Re: Snooker

I'd forgotten about big Bill Werbeniuk!

But my point was that although Canada had some great snooker players, including a world champion in Cliff Thorburn, Canadians generally hadn't heard of them. At least that's been my experience.

If all this coverage of bin Laden is getting on your nerves there's a great afternoon of good snooker on BBC 2.

Bugger - missed it - seems nerves got the better of the young lad

Re: Snooker

It was a great game and yes the young lad seemed to tightened up near the end. Ooh that didn't come out right.
Anyway it was an absorbing match that was well accompanied by a nice chicken vindaloo lunch.

FYI. The World Snooker Championship starts tomorrow at the famed Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. I'm sure with a bit snooping around one could find a half decent stream.

They're [BBC] showing it live from 21 April to 7 May Times: Sessions at 1000, 1430 & 1900 BST and some highlights around midnight. If it's anything like last years competition it'll be a cracker.

Most Canadians just have different ways to misspend their youth.

The Chinese seem to have fallen in love with snooker with five of them getting through qualifying in the main draw. I think its a very healthy thing for the sport.

Have you ever seen anything like that in your life! Says Virgo at the end.

Brilliant.

Not as good as the 5 minute one but still brilliant.

Watch here

It's on Eurosport TV in France, which is fine for the next few days. But I return to the land of the Midnight Iced Hockey on Thursday. Is it on TV there?

You'll have to watch it online unfortunately as it can't compete with curling in Canada for airtime.

I suppose if you've smoked a fat one it could be pass the time. I rather miss the One Man and His Dog competitions, especially the Christmas specials.

HID is off to some present some bolloxy theory on bollox at a conference or something later this week so I envision, lots of lager, a large naff-off order of extra spicy Indian food and hours of snooker on the big telly.
