Do we have many members from Newfoundland or Labrador? I really want to come for a visit to your neck of the woods, as everything I see about it looks beautiful. By the sounds of it, perhaps it might be a good place to escape to for a spot of sun.

A small, but select band. Do come and visit. We could be persuaded to buy you a pint.

That's horrible. Are blackflies everywhere in Canada?

I have never experienced them. I have travelled all over southern Alberta and southern B.C.

Dunno. Here they are a problem for a month or so when the leaves come out and the grass starts growing.

We get our share of mozzies and No-see-ums but I'm not aware of blackflies in town.

And the dreaded June bugs of course.

Last summer in Toronto I was almost eaten alive. Don't think they were mozzies...but the bites itched like hell. It took about 4 months for the bites to disappear.

That couldn't have been black-flies. The southern limit of their range in Ontario is Muskoka (+/-).

I thought all flies were black? I wonder if there's a reason why there's so many about?

The Horse Fly is big and brown. I usually meet one when I go to the beach. He likes to try to bite me on my leg.

Black Flies are tiny and squishy and attack in swarm formations. When you feel them bite and swat them off, they usually explode leaving fly bits and blood all over the place.

Deer Fly are about the same size as a regular house fly. They have pretty patterns on their wings and bite you through your clothes. I hate Deer Fly the most.

Horse/deer flies are dreadful. You feel them taking a chunk out of you. The bite is bothersome for months too. I have also been bitten in Toronto by something similar...but it looked more like a black house fly...but slightly smaller. Bit me on the top of my foot when I was in a store. I felt it...looked down and saw it fly off.

I've posted about this before but the only time bugs don't bite me during the summer months is if a carry a small device from Lentek.
