Greyhounds anyone? Racehorses? 100 sled dogs axed because they were longer profitable is the tip of the iceberg. Canada's a major center for animal slaughter and, in many cases, I can see the case for putting the animals to death. Apart from eating them, what use is there for 100 fierce dogs?

Re: Sled dogs culled :(

This only came to light cos the person who did the dog killing complained to work safe BC about work related stress. There didn't seem to be an issue with the killing itself, just how he did it. Seems to me that they went wrong with trying to shoot the dogs when the true Canadian way would have been to use a large stick with a nail in the end.

I'm currently trying to convince an otherwise intelligent & humane woman we know that leaving a dog tied to a stake in -19oC weather (with -30oC windchill), with nothing but a small unheated kennel with no door to escape the snow, is barbaric..

She doesn't get it & probably never will..

Unthinking cruelty to the underclass in Nova Scotia is endemic, racism is rampant, the health care system is failing & Food Bank usage rises year on year.....

Who's going to give a shit about a lonely frozen dog.?..

yup - tis def the way it was done - I can see the business side but also the pet owner side.

Also the man that did it - was he forced to?? he is claiming compensations for work related stress but did some one hold a gun to his head and say do it?? I doubt it. . .

It seems the man responsible for the culling was once the owner/operator of Howling Dog Tours before it was taken over by Outdoor Adventures of Whistler ... and he is traumatised. He did try to rehome them before hand but was instructed to do what was necessary to cut operational costs.

Unfortunately, whilst this is in the news the thousands of domesticated cats and dogs euthanised every year by shelters due to lack of available adoptive homes isn't.

:(

That is less of the scandal than the irresponsible owners who permit indiscriminate breeding by not having their dogs and cats neutered/spayed. What does one imagine that should happen to all those dogs and cats that can't be rehomed? Some kind of dog/cat paradise where they can go live happily for ever after?

It has been argued by some on this very message board, that neutering is wrong as it is a medical procedure carried out without the consent of the animal. Therefore, to have an un-neutered animal is the most humane thing...so long as it is under your complete control for every minute of it's life.

That thread sticks in my head as being one of the dumbest, most moronic things I have heard in recent years. This type of thinking is what you are up against.

Sigh......

I was commenting on the story the OP posted, my comment about the euthanasia of pets was for comparisom purposes.

Why jump all over that part of the comment and not the story posted?

Sigh......

Re: Sled dogs culled :(

We just took in another rescue. She's a Chihuahua/Jack Russell cross (so really small)..
She has an autoimmune disease, all it means is she has to be shampooed twice a week.
Rather than put themselves through this terrible inconvenience the original owners just tied her to their deck & left her to die.
When she was taken by the RCMP (unofficially) she had no fur on her body & was covered in stinking open sores..

She's a great little dog & is tormenting our English Bull Terrier as I type...

We get all of our animals Spayed/Neutered as soon as they are old enough..

So your comparision is as pointless and off topic as my 'jumping all over it?' Or they are both as relevant.

To the original story, ghastly as it is, I have to echo dbd33's question: 'What does one do with 100 semi-wild sled dogs that have outlived their usefulness?' Rehome them? To whom?

:banghead:

If you want comparisoms, read some of the articles on this website (warning, graphic content) http://sleddogwatchdog.com/
