Default SIN and all that

Hi,

We are about to move to Vancouver from the UK in the next couple of weeks. I am trying to set up a landline at our new rental property. Telus have asked me to supply two forms of ID from: passport, North American Driving License, SIN, or Health Card. If I don't give them this information then they will want me to leave a deposit with them... I was surprised that they would not accept a PR card?!?

Anyway, the only two that I can supply are passport and SIN, however I am a little cautious about giving my SIN to them, as we were told to keep this secret and only give to the government or an employer - is that correct advice? Or should I give Telus my SIN?

Many thanks in advance,

James.

I don't give my SIN to anyone who does not need it. Your PR card should be acceptable as it is a govt. issued form of ID, speak to a supervisor, they should be able to help.

BTW banks will also ask for an need your SIN to report to CRA.

Thank you - that's what I thought. Glad I didn't give to them.

BMO said they would only need my SIN if I had a savings account, oitherwise it was up to me if I gave it to them.

It is only if they need to report income to CRA.
