Setanta EPL changes

Everyone up to date on EPL TV coverage this season?

I know there are a few who suspend Setanta for the close season. They may want to keep it that way.

Up to now, we've been used to 3 Saturday games (with Sportsnet offering an alternative middle game), 1 Sunday game (while The Score had another) and a Monday game.

It's quite hard to tell what the new pattern is exactly but as far as I can tell TSN2 will have the first Saturday game and Monday's.

Setanta and Sportsnet continue to offer a choice for the middle (3.00) game. Where it's hard to tell is the 'tea-time' game.

Next Saturday that third game is on Setanta but the following Saturday Sportsnet has it.

So it's entirely possible that one can do without Setanta as far as Saturday and Monday goes and still see four games.

The major difference appears to be Sunday where Setanta will now be having two games - I think The Score will have an Italian game instead.

I'm more than happy overall; TSN1&2 and Sportsnet are a bonus with my bilingual package so at no extra charge I gain the Sunday game previously covered by The Score.

But maybe some folk will need to consider adding TSN2? Although you could jetison The Score?

While you could argue Setanta might now offer less VFM (3, maybe 4 games Sat-Mon instead of 5) they do appear to be adding several live Championship games and still have the League Cup matches as well as under 21s.

Cheers for that. I'd love to get rid of Santanta but until the line up is fixed I'll keep it for the next month. Is ESPN doing the CL this year? What about the FA Cup?

Actually here's link that might help. Soccer TV

I find this link very good and accurate and easy to figure out if Setanta is worth it..I believe in some Canadian markets an HD version came out on August 1

http://footballtvcanada.blogspot.com/

I'm one of those who cancels Setanta for the summer...I think that Rogers have a free preview week or so starting on the 13th of this month.

edit...found the link with the free preview information

Yep. That's the one I use and it's the one I based that post on.

Plenty of International Rugger to justify keeping Setanta in summer for me. Shame the Rugby League disappeared though.:(

That one is pretty good too. Just a little too much extra info on it for my liking, but I keep it as a back up

Just talked to Shaw and the disinterested woman said she didn't know when or if they were going to get it, I suspect they will at some point. I also had to add TSN2 in a package to be able to get the Sat morning and Mon night games. This is starting to get spendy. :frown:

But still good overall though. Setanta was a fantastic deal for the cost.

I just wish there'd be more pre/half time/post game chat/replays available.

I have a Rogers HD box but so far have not found the HD channel number. If if anyone has it I would really appreciate it? The good news is Spurs kick off on Rogers and I have HD for that.

Can't believe that they gave TSN back the EPL. Not looking forwards to their ads throughout the game (if you watch F1, then you'll be use to this) and half mast attempt at coverage.
Just when coverage was going in the right direction...
Anyone know if Sirius/XM are going to have it this year...there is nothing on their website...

Sirius Schedule

I am lucky as there are a few bars that play the football in town...

Have survived without Setanta since arriving last year. We have TSN & TSN2 so I'll look forward to the extra games. The issue with Setanta is that they had most of the top fixtures each weekend (eg. Liverpool vs Man Utd etc.) so we'll see which games TSN get.

Cheers!

Uh oh.

Just noticed that some of the games are on Sportsnet One which is a new channel, rather than 'ordinary' sportsnet.

On the14th Sportsnet offers an alternative '3.00' game but Sportsnet One offers another - giving a choice of three.

But on the 21st the tea time game is on Sportsnet One only.

No doubt this will need a separate subscription, but it might not be that often.

Here in Rogers area in Ottawa, Setanta HD is on a free preview until the 22nd but some reason the SD version is not....I'll probably re-subscribe after the 22nd....the England/Hungary game is on today at 18h45 eastern time. I already watched the extended ITV highlights via UK Nova...but some BE readers may not have watched it already.

As per the standard, there is no one go to channel for the EPL...Setanta seems to have lost the french league but they do have that good 1 hour highlights show on a Sunday evening and if you follow one team then you'll need Setanta to see all of their games and some of the Champions League and I believe it is the only way to watch the FA Cup.

Rogers also have a streaming package, 300+ games only for $14.99/month or $149.99 for the season. This may be an option for some.

I can see more of a pattern now.

For the next three Saturdays the teatime game is on Sportsnet One only.

Sportsnet One also has CL games, but then so does TSN2, Setanta and 'ordinary' Sportsnet (even two CL games!!).

Unless you can get Sportsnet One the Saturday teatime game is 'lost' whereas an alternative CL game or three will be available.

Watched the Spurs game this morning and nearly had a heart attack at first as it appeared that TSN was going to us American commentators but it turned out up you only had to put with those tossers for the introduction. It was a close call and I had to wipe up the toast I'd chucked at the tv but all was good in the end. Spurs should have won 5 - 0 though. :frown:

Hi ...!st Post

Does anybody know how many games Setanta have lost for this EPL Season.
They had only one live game on Saturday.....no game on monday in EPL.
They used to have 3 on Saturday and always the Monday night game.
Have emailed them twice and got no reply.Any considering cancelling?

Thanks.

Last year Sportsnet had a Saturday 10 AM game (Eastern), and the Score had a Sunday 11 AM game ... and Setanta had the other 8 games.

This year Sportsnet has a Saturday 10 AM game, Sportsnet1 has the 12:30 pm game, and TSN2 has the early Saturday game (or a 10 AM game if there is none) and the Monday game (if there is one) ... and Setanta has the other 6 games.

So Setanta has lost 2 games.

I think Setanta has also lost the French league to EuroWorldSports which is a division of TLN. The Score lost EPL rights and now have Seria A.

Setanta have picked up some international feed shows from the Premier League itself. A couple of nights ago they had callers from Ghana talking to Andy Townsend and the like about the weekend games.

Yes, Setanta has certainly lost some live games.

But we've all been agreed that what they gave us was fantastic for the price and what we're getting now must still be very good.

I don't think we can under estimate the Sunday factor. It appears that Setanta will be showing two Sunday Prem games live whereas it used to be one, with another on The Score. Without Setanta we'd now need to rely on streams for those.

How much did people pay for The Score for just one game on Sundays and how does that compare to Setanta for two games each Sunday plus one on Saturday and all the others in the week?

Setanta is still a great deal surely.

Added to say:
Nice to get a bit of analysis too even if not what we're used to. At least we get some replays of incidents.

Also, has anyone noticed the match atmosphere is coming across better?

I think Sentanta is overpriced at 15 per month while the score is only 2.50 per month. Don't forget it's only 1 channel while in the UK it was at least 3, and yes I know that UK Sentanta has gone.

The appearance of EPL games on subscription only TSN2 and Sportsnet One is a bit of a concern.

That said, I've been following the exploits of Toronto FC in MLS and Concacaf Champions League (CBC, GolTV) and I'm more than happy just watching that weekly. When in Rome.....

Well yes if you want to look at it in such a limited way.;)

But last season the score gave one live EPL game a week while Setanta gave 3 on a Saturday, 1 on a Sunday and 1 on a Monday. So just on live EPL games alone that was 5 times as many.

Then there was at least one live league cup game and at least one live FA Cup game in the Cup weeks and two live Champions League games .

On average there were probably 7 times as many top live games a week plus delayed coverage of as many.

That $15 for Setanta seems to be pretty much universal while The Score may have cost more, depending on the provider. With my provider it was a third of Setanta's cost for so much less.

Shaw has emailed me to say they will now be including Sportsnet One.

It's a little confusing as they said standard would be available at no extra cost with HD being part of the HD sports bundle.

Then it said this channel would be on free preview until 4 October.

Makes you wonder what the free preview promo is for. SD people will have it anyway and so will HD sports bundle people. The only ones that won't will be HD customers without an HD sports package and presumably they are without it because they're not interested in sports/football.

If they are interested but don't think a bundle is worth it won't they simply carry on and make do with the bonus of a new sports channel, albeit in SD? That's better than not at all isn't it?

Perhaps I have missed something obvious. :o

I have given up any hope of the cable or satellite companies knowing which channels will be available where and in what format and for what price.

I'm in Rogers land and manage to get 30% off Setanta along with all channels for a 1 year contract...so far, I get Sportsnet 1 in both SD and HD. Fox Sports World Canada and EuroWorld Sports are only in SD...Setanta is in both.

BTW.....I think you mentioned that you cancelled Fox and then they were running the Man City/Rapid Vienna game.....it was on Euroworld Sports later yesterday evening.....not sure if you get that on free preview where you are.

If the cable/satellite companies treated cradle sport fans the way they treat footie fans in this country there would be a mutiny.

Yes, I noticed the graphic on that site that lists the games. The stream was okay though...for the Liverpool game too. I managed to miss every single goal as it happened (except the pen) by doing things like putting the kettle on :frown:

At least a CL game doesn't get replaced by Curling now that TSN has more than one channel.

Re: Setanta EPL changes

http://www.edmontonjournal.com/enter...865/story.html

Shaw Communications and Telus have announced viewers will be able to watch Sportsnet One.

The Calgary-based cable provider Shaw says it is the first to offer the new all-sports channel in Western Canada on Shaw Cable; and Shaw Direct is currently the only provider to offer the channel nationally.

A deal to carry the channel by Telus is being finalized, but until then customers will be able to preview the channel, said spokesman Jim Johannsson.

"We're just days away from offering Sportsnet One on a free preview basis," Johannsson said.

On Telus, it will be available on channel 106 in standard definition and 677 in high definition.

There will be a national feed, a Pacific feed available in B.C., and Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames feeds available in Alberta only.

Pricing is still to be determined.

"For the initial preview, it will be added to an existing theme pack at no extra charge. The caveat is our customer already has to subscribe to that theme pack," he said.

The Shaw deal comes after a month which saw Shaw accuse Rogers Sportsnet, the content provider, of using back-door tactics and holding sports fans hostage in the stalled launch of Rogers' new national channel such as giving inadequate notice about the channel's introduction.

A Shaw executive was also reported as saying price was a sticking point.

Rogers responded that cable distributors all received notice in June of the launch.

The two companies had been unable to strike a deal for the launch of the channel, which airs NHL hockey, Major League Baseball, NBA and Barclays Premier League soccer games.

Shaw said Sportsnet One gives customers access to regular and pre-season games for the Oilers, Flames, Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks.

"As customer advocates, we've worked hard to make sure we can bring more NHL hockey to our customers across Canada," said Shaw president Peter Bissonnette,

"Personally, as a hockey fan, I couldn't be happier to be able to offer this channel before pre-season starts next week."

The channel was supposed to air starting Aug. 14, but didn't become available to a western Canadian audience largely serviced by Shaw until Wednesday.

Adding to the stakes was a 10-year deal between Rogers Sportsnet and the Edmonton Oilers announced in August that the 24-hour digital sports channel would carry games which would not have been broadcast other than on pay-per-view.

A similar deal was announced for the Flames.

Most customers will receive Sportsnet One as part of their existing television package, Shaw said in a release. Sportsnet One will be available to all Shaw Digital TV customers in a free preview until Oct. 31.

After the preview, it will be included in the Shaw Digital TV, HD Plus and HD Sports packages.

For Shaw Direct customers, the channel will be in the English and French Essentials package and HD sports packages.

Sportsnet One is new and is in addition to the other Sportsnets - Ontario, Pacific, East & West.

As far as footie goes, it's really just replacing a weekend game that was previously on Setanta.

For those who don't have Setanta it's a bonus.
