Scrap-booking/Card Making

Hi - does anyone on here do either of these?

I'm looking to start and would like some advice on some websites that I can look at for inspiration. I did a search on Yahoo last night and ended up with lots of sites selling supplies but am more interested in finding examples of different methods if possible. Or book recommendations would be good too.

Thanks

There's a hotel near us that was organising a Scrapbooking Retreat where you learn how to do it. I know thats no use to you (otherside of country) but maybe there is a hotel in your area that does a similar thing?

Re: Scrap-booking/Card Making

Thanks very much, I'll keep on the look out for similar around here. :)

At the mo, though, the scrapbooking side is more for one particular project which I just need some inspiration for. So I thought the internet would be a good place to start before paying out for courses as such. Though that may be an option in the future.

The card-making side is a potential (small!) money earner for a friend who wants some handmade cards done for her Clients - she does a home-business thing. I have ideas but just need to focus my mind! I'm rather scattered at the moment.

IMO scrapbooking is fine as long as its done in small groups of consenting adults, in private, and no one else is forced into participating........

Please please dont make me look at another book loaded with sentimental homilies!!!

Re: Scrap-booking/Card Making

Nope - no sentimental homilies with the scrapbooking (or kids looking cute gazing into the distance or covered in chocolate!) - its more a way of presenting some information I am teaching in a different/more creative manner.

The cards will be packed to the gills with sentiment, however, that is specifically what has been asked for.:o In order to satisfy that request I was also searching for "inspirational" words yesterday - it made the English side of me feel quite queasy.

Ah now that I can understand, the creative presentation bit.

Yes the wording in cards does tend to be a little queasymaking, queasious???

Hi there i've been cardmaking for a couple of years and made and sold a few, but I mostly just make to give to others and for fun.

I use a great website for inspiration and ideas which is Docrafts (you may have been there already). They also have a discussion forum which watch out! as it gets very addictive

Anyway the web addy is http://www.docrafts.co.uk. It is a uk site, but they don't sell products on their website. It's all about getting inspiration and there is loads of folks pics of their cards/scrapbooks and anything else crafty you can imagine. I started making jewellery as well. If only there was more time

I have just yesterday done two pages! My 1st attempts at this strange hobby. Whilst I was getting my 1st lot of supplies I noticed that there are classes.

Both Scrapbooker Paradise and Michaels do classes on different topics. Would one of those help?

And yes my pages were sentimental ones - of the dog. I would not force my photo albums on anyone:eek: Here's me at the beach, here's me at the Medina, here's me on the beach on a different day AAAaaarrrrrgggghhh!

I just did a search for SCRAPBOOK in the Edmonton Public Library's catalogue, and found 142 book titles about scrapbooking.

Since you said in another thread that you were trying to trim your expenses, ladymoose, the public library may be something to consider.

Like a Bazaar type place - I believe they are usually inside a walled town and usually have some sort of religious thing going on.

(The one I've been to is the Sousse, Tunisia one).

Love the Queasiality!

Re: Scrap-booking/Card Making

I have obtained good, free information on many topics from About.com . So, with that previous experience behind me, I did a Google search for ABOUT SCRAPBOOKING, and found About.com's site on scrapbooking. Yes, there are ads on the screen, but you still can get free articles on the supplies you need to get started, scrapbooking techniques, free scrapbooking stuff (free clip art, free patterns, free transparency designs and on and on).

The same search brought up links to these other sites that also provide free information (albeit there are ads on the sites, just as there are on the screen that regular members of the BE website see):As I said, it goes on for pages. I'm running out of steam, but hopefully by now you get the idea.

Hey - great response - thanks everyone! I knew there were some secret crafters out there somewhere!

Thanks for all the research Judy - I will be reviewing those links tonight - you do work hard for us on here:thumbsup: I'm an old hand at libraries - my mum used to take me as a kid and I now take my son and husband though I was a little surprised when we first arrived that there is a yearly fee here in Parkland county. I haven't got there yet to pick up some crafting books but it will be done. :D

PiffPoff - I've been there too! Got the photos somewhere to prove it. Didn't like Tunisia much - men kept pulling my hair and I got a bad case of sickness which kept me within sight of the loo for several days! :eek:Good luck with your project - a bit of sentimentality around pets is good  I'm taking a trip to St Michaels on Sunday probably to see what supplies they have - just wanted to get a bit inspiration first so I know what to focus on - and I'll see what courses they are offering.

MrsLauder - You are just the expert I was hoping to find :D I will be going straight to the site you recommended after this and start absorbing knowledge (rubs hands together!). Funnily enough, my mum sent me over some of that silver clay stuff that you can make jewellry out of for last Christmas - that's another thing on the list I want to try too. Thanks very much for your post

Hi Ladymoose. Is there a 2nd hand book store near you. There is usually some excellent books in there with all the crafting top tips and ideas, for a lot better price than new.

Also use your local dollar store for supplies just as nice stuff as Michaels. I do love Micahels tho and could easily spend a small fortune in there on all that arty farty stuff.

Hope you have fun being all creative and nearer Crimbo aim to have a house sale with all your creations. I find its very popular here and locals really do love home made crafts for gifts.
May as well try and get a few bob out of it while your at it.

Re: Scrap-booking/Card Making

Hi there Minihaha - There's not that many 2nd hand book stores near us - they are mostly in the city which we don't tend to venture to unless we have to! But it's a good idea - I'll have to see if Amazon has any 2nd hand ones if the library doesn't turn up much. Thanks for the encouragement. I have been specifically asked to make some cards by a friend who wants to buy them from me - so hopefully a little bit of cash will come my way.

Hi ladymoose,

I'm a crafter and I make my own cards.....have quite a collection of supplies over the years....I like rubber stamping and embossing. I go on a cracking UK website called "imag-e-nation.com", am a member on the forum and it has some great inspirations for card ideas. I get my supplies from Michaels, Scrapbooker's Paradise and the dollar stores sell some good craft bits like peel-offs, embellishments and mountings, etc. If you want any advice on anything on card making, drop me a pm and I'll be happy to help!

Happy crafting!

Thanks Jaycee - I knew there must be more than one closet crafters on this forum :D Thanks for the link (I checked it out last night) - great stuff - and the offer to help out. I'm going to try and jot down some ideas today and then get going next week hopefully - with the cards anyway. Cheers

My friend owns a craft store here in LEthbridge and she runs the courses for this

Hi

I do a bit of cardmaking and scrapbooking. Don't you have a craft shop near you that does classes as most of them do, our shop does classes for beginners, intermediate and experts found I learned a lot of things I didn't know at the classes also gives you a chance to make friends.

For books like previous post go to the library they generally have quite a good craft section.

Hi Folks

Can't give any references to web sites (I have bought some fab books - The joy of card making, compendiim of card makig techniques, designing handcrafted cards - but just to say I love cardmaking, it is perhaps my most enjoyable past-time and the only time I am truly creative.

It started out as a hobby which I thought would save me money but in actual fact, I have spent a fortune on cool gadgets and lovely paper.

I may break even in 2010!

Hi.I too am from Stony Plain and have been looking around locally for scrap book classes and there doesn`t seem to be anything out of Edmonton. I picked up a couple of 'how to' books from the library but there is nothing like hands on to learn a new skill.

Hi Ladymoose,

This is a hobby I was introduced to a few years ago. It's a really creative outlet for stress! I don't have as much time as I'd like but there are some good magazines out there. Judy gave you very useful information but you might like to try these sites - considered bibles for the craft:

http://www.creatingkeepsakes.com/

http://www.papercraftsmag.com/

http://www.simplescrapbooksmag.com/

http://www.makingmemories.com/mmgreetings/

http://www.memorymakersmagazine.com/

http://www.canadianscrapbooker.ca/

You can often find these at the library too and if they are older versions, often they are loaned out. Eventually they are sold as well so that's a good and cheap way to get some reference books to keep.

This link to stores might help too.

http://www.csc4k.com/edmonton/index.php?p=storesponsors

Also, for headlines and titles, try this one:

http://www.dafont.com/ - great for fonts!

Happy Scrapping! :D

Hey - thanks everybody its great to hear from you all :D I'm listening to everyone's advice and am going to follow all the links - already got some great tips from the earlier ones.

There's a couple of scrap booking shops in Spruce I think - and I know one offers kids drawing classes - might pop along there and see what's what. But the only other one I know of is Michaels on the west side. But I see from that stores link there may be more.

I'm can see I'm going to have to be careful here and keep and tight hold on those pursestrings :thumbsup:

Sorry Transplantgirl, I missed your reply. Don't know why you can't PM - maybe your id isn't set up to do it?

Anyway - great to hear from you - you've obviously seen some changes in Stony being here for so long! I've only been here for 3 years - still a newbie.

I was in the library yesterday and picked up a couple of books too - but they didn't have that many - I'll have to order some in I think. From following up on a few of the links above, I think the Scrapbook Oasis place in Spruce (next to Smitty's on the 16a) runs courses.

I'm making my inaugral trip to Michaels on Friday (dragging son with me as it's a PD day), to pick up my first lot of supplies. Thanks to everyone's help here, I have a couple of ideas forming - keeping it simple to start off with. :D

You'll have to tell me when you're going to take them back and I'll go in the same day and get them out  Off to Michaels in an hour or so - just waiting till the carnage on the road calms down - honestly, one tiny, tiny shower of snow and the madness starts
