Scents/perfumes in the work place.

For years I have dabbed on eau du toilette or after shave and gone to work and received the odd compliment of how good I smell. I don't bathe in the stuff nor put on Brut, Hai Karate or Stetson brands
It has never been an issue until last year when I taught a class in an office in Calgary and as I was only there for 2 weeks it was brought to our attention. This morning I started a 4 week assignment in another office and dabbed on a bit of Armani.
Later in the day it was brought to my attention of the Govts policy on a scent/perfume free work environment.
I wonder if it would be rather insensitive of me to take peanut butter butties to work tomorrow:confused:

At my orientation 2 years ago, we were told not wear any aftershave or perfumes when at work. Drinking at lunchtime was also a no no.

Re: Scents/perfumes in the work place.

Everywhere I have worked since around 2000 or so has been scent free, one place was so strict even if they noticed you had scented deodorant on they would send you home, but luckily the other places were more rational.

I never use scents, so its never bothered me, but seems to be the norm in large organizations now.

Did have 1 company in the US try and regulate lunches and ban peanuts and items containing peanuts, but a lawyer got involved from the union and the company dropped it vs fighting in court to keep a ban on peanut products.

At some jobs drinking within 12 hours of your start time is a no no.

Are there any policies or laws regarding farting in the work place?

My daughter said perfumes are banned in her work place as is smoking. She is allergic to peanuts...something her coworker was not a aware of but is now because my daughter's face began to swell when he began to eat peanuts.

I really notice scents now as so few people use them, some perfumes will give my OH a headache. I tend to steer clear of using perfume in the summer, well anything thats not deep woods off etc

Re: Scents/perfumes in the work place.

Everywhere seems to be scent-free and I have found that because I rarely wear it nowadays I have actually developed a bit of an allergy and sneeze. Just goes to show that allergies can also be created by lack of exposure. Same goes for bugs and sickness. A little bit of dirt does you no harm, except in the case of poor food hygiene.

we are a "scent free and nut free environment"
the first doesn't bother me, the second perturbs me as we still seem to employ so many of them and it causes me to have massive cravings for peanut butter.

Canada is home to the scent Nazi's to an extent rarely found (IME) elsewhere. My workplace is scent free + nut and fish free. Deodorant, mercifully, seems to be permissible so long as it isn't too smelly.;)

I wonder about the legality of all this. The sniffer woman here is an office administrator, you call her if you need a work station set up or a partition torn down, I don't believe she has any particular training or expertise in sniffing. Nonetheless, if you're a busybody and you think someone smells, you call her and she comes and sniffs them. If she finds them smelly they're warned or sent home. Since most people are casual labourers being sent home costs them some amount of pay. Can they say they didn't smell and sue? Would the company back the sniffer in court or, as they say here, throw her under the bus? It all seems poorly thought out, just rampant bossiness.

You should go on a diet of boiled cabbage, pickled egg and London Porter and see if Mrs Sniffer can pinpoint the source of that one.

We are a scent free but sadly not nut free, nuts of any description. I can't abide the smell of peanut butter and people have the gall to eat it and then breathe out peanut butter breath.

I haven't come across a sniffer person, official or otherwise.

We are scent free workplace (it helps that I set the rules), perfumes for many (incl myself) trigger migraine. I have to leave a venue where there is a strong smell of perfume. For those with food allergies, I don't believe the smell of peanuts triggers and reaction and those with a reaction.

I do eat things at my desk that attract attention, soups, curries, hummous, people come and ask the recipes so I know they can smell the food. I half expect a call from the sniffer. I wonder if she volunteered for that role, it can't pleasant.

Would it work as well if it was Fullers ESB rather than London Porter ? Just askin' ! :)

I have to wonder, does the sniffer person get involved when someone smells bad too?

I love perfumes, I don't like people that swim in them though. I see no harm in smelling nice.

If we had no scents and no drinking in my previous civil service job, I wouldn't have made it through the almost 15 years!

I have only Pride. I have quite a lot of Pride though as the LCBO have discontinued it and I went on a tour of shops, snapping up whatever remained.

Who knows? It's the government, they do things on whim. I asked at the usual shop and the woman said "people buy several cans at once, we don't have the packaging". That's true, they do try and put 24 cans of beer in a paper bag on a rainy day, but they're equally useless at selling other beers. The LCBO website, btw, has an alternative product feature, the alternative to Pride offered is Colt 45.

The retail beer "monopoly" in Ontario nominally sells it but none of their shops have any, the customer service phone goes unanswered and email to them bounces. It is however sold in NY so whenever we next need building supplies I'll get beer too.

They got pissed off with the number of empty cans they had to deal with from Mr LCBDBDDO.

A fish-free zone in Newfoundland? Whatever next?

About a month ago I was in a pub in Calgary that sells London Pride on tap - when I ordered a pint the waitress said "it's not the normal London Pride, it's the maltier style."

I was intrigued, and asked what it was called. "London Pride, just maltier."

I got a pint, and don't know what it was - tasted more like Big Rock Traditional - but the waitress was adamant that it was just a different style of London Pride that they had in.

i have a phobia of smelling of B.O, constantly putting deodorant and aftershave/cologne on just incase...are any of these scent free places going to make an exception for me like they're making an exception for the minority of people who say they get a wee bit of a sore head because someone makes the effort not to smell like shit?

These "workplaces" should be focusing more on productivity rather than worrying about some divvy's cologne.

Some of the clothes co workers wear both male and female sometimes make me feel nauseous and want to vomit do I have a case like they have for scents/perfumes in the work place?
A 300 lb lady should not be bending over in front of me wearing lululemon yoga pants nor should the guy be wearing sandals and socks and a Hawaiian style shirt.

That reminds me... ever walked past those 'ladies of a certain age' and got that very particular pungent aroma? "You need a big scoosh of Impulse, lady!"

Smokers are the worst, they think a few dabs of cologne and a mint will cover up the stench.
