Sausage Rolls

My girlfriend wants to have a few people over for some nibbles, which I did suggest was an absolutely rubbish idea, but she insists, so trying to be helpful, I suggested sausage rolls, anyway a rather fractious discussion ensued over whether mini sausage rolls should be served hot or cold. I favour them being cold, she said I was wrong. Thank naff we're not serving mince pies to honest. :o

So, what do you think? Should they be hot or cold?

Re: Sausage Rolls

Hot, then they go cold. Everyone happy.

Re: Sausage Rolls

Are you serving them to Canadians? If so who cares because they won't know the difference and will be compelled by their self preservation skills which they think is politeness to smile sweetly anyway.

If they're not it could go either way: in Greggs in Scotland you can get them hot or cold. I personally prefer them to be cold but I will eat hot too. But then again my taste buds are not exactly fully Scottish, definitely not Canadian so who knows.

A mixture of yanks, cradles and some other places. And they're the little ones, actually I think they're very good. The thing of it is, I'm not going to be baking minutes before they turn up, so I'd have to put them in the microwave and that might make them soggy.

In that case you must video it and post their reactions. There are tons of awesome clips like "Americans tasting Irish snacks". Facial expressions are priceless. I couldn't find one for Scottish snacks though.

A moment of self doubt: I've been away so long I can't tell if Sausage Rolls are Scottish or a UK wide thing. They have them in England right?

I voted hot but not if you are going to put them in the microwave. They will go all chewy.

Have you got one of those metal dish things that posh people have, with the
little burners that keep things hot?

Yes.

If the sausage rolls are served hot then Oink will have lots of fun watching people burn themselves on them.

I suppose this dilemma would be the same for other snack type foods, like mini quiches and pigs-in-blanket.

No, that'd just encourage HID to invite more people round.

I put a cheese board out once. B###ards ate the naffing lot:(
Just left me a few little stilton crumbs and an empty port bottle.

Sausage rolls should *not* be microwaved. If they're not going in the oven, then it has to be cold

That must of cost you a fortune over here. I find not having a shower and speaking loudly in a Jamie Oliver accent and sayings tends to keep the social gatherings at ours reasonably short. I did have one woman who said the sponge cake was lovely and would be good at her house. I thought she wanted the recipe but she wanted take the actual cake with her. :frown:

Cold - because they're small they will cool quickly anyway and better a cold snack than one that's gone cold.

If they are Canadian sausage rolls, they will be rank hot or cold.

Just put them straight in the bin/dog/hobo...

The posher ones from Safeways are pretty good. They're called country style ones, but you need to cook them for 45mins rather 25-30mins they suggest. And a nice egg wash on top makes them look nice.

To be fair, though you are generally right (and though I feel like I am stabbing myself in the arm as I say this), I actually had a *good* sausage roll in a restaurant once here. Though they fancied it up a bit and didn't call it a sausage roll.

You can get decent ones from M and M frozen food stores. Him indoors eats them. Their sirloin meatballs are ok too, have seen those served up at dos with cocktails sticks stuck in them, and a dipping sauce. All Canadisn parties must have dips.

You can't get decent ones of those here either.

[Insert regional name] Superstore sells them. But they are like the 'value' ones in Tesco.

A search for solid data on the best way to serve them has produced a chart for Greggs Sausage Rolls developed by snack blogger Jim.
The graph (wouldn't a pie chart be more appropriate?) seems to suggest they're best served hot then aren't as tasty when cold. (In the article however Jim starts off by saying cold is better, is the graph backwards?). Bear in mind this study is for a mass-produced snack. I've purchased many cold sausage rolls from bakeries and enjoyed them, and I've made them a few times and eaten them hot then cut them into minis and served cold at the bar and they're all good.

Whether hot or cold are best complimented by various condiments is a question that deserves additional practical research.

Never liked sausage rolls, so whether hot or cold is academic. A modern pasty, on the other hand, something with chicken curry or cheese and spinach, is much more edible.

What happened to the picture of the sausage rolls? Did you eat them all?

Here's my test run this morning.

No, they're from Safeways, probably the best food item in the shop. You have to get the pork ones though as the beef ones are a bit smelly.
