You say "thread drift", I say "information digression"
I guess its one of those "Yes minister" irregular verbs
I suffer from informational digression, You suffer from thread drift, He suffers from typing more and more bullshit

It been on TV recently (on Vision TV for reasons that totally escape me);
"I have an independent mind
You are an eccentric
He is round the twist"

Well lets put it this way act 1980. I earned last year £63000 as a bricklayer and I am moving to Canada in 2009. When I get there I fully expect to earn approx half that sort of money and yet be faced with simillar living costs.
But guess what...................... I dont care about money.

Quality of life is what I'm looking forward to. Oh and not having my car broken into AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN :curse:
If it's money that motivates you then Canada is not the place to be heading. In fact if it is only money that motivates you then please dont go.

With that sort of income you no not need to move to Canada, as there are plenty decent places to live in the UK and not get you car broken into. We back in the UK after living in Canada. Some nights I do not lock the cars and rarely lock the garages. I only had a car broken into 20 years ago in a pub carpark.
Its quite ironic that we moved back to England after 8 years in Canada to get a better quality of life again.
I agree about moving to Canada for money. Its not there for most immigrants apart from the lucky few. I can remember in Ottawa meeting a Lebanese Engineer, who was selling used cars, told me that your never be rich in Canada but most people would be confortable.
I agree with Iaink that I found Canada no cheaper than living in the UK. I am quite pleased being back in the UK we are in a position to put a decent amount of money in our savings again, after not being able to really save for 8years.
From my own experience cutting your income in half definitely reduces your families quality of life in any country and not just because you are emigrating.
On a positive note moving to Canada is a good life experience and my 14 year old son said recently thats he is lucky that he knows that you are not limited to one town or country for jobs when he leaves university.

Hudd, I'm happy for you if you are happy to be back. Quality of life is a personnal thing. Me myself do not measure my quality of life by income alone although of course it is nice to have cash in the pocket and the bank. My old boss used to say that I would rather be miserable with a million in the bank rather than miserable and skint.
I was a bit peed off yesterday as I had my car broken into again for the third time in just over 2 years that I have been in my house. I live in one of the nicer parts of Bolton, Lancs and I paid 230,000 so that I can listen to traffic, have drunks walking through my garden on the way home, kids love playing football up against my wall and being told to eff off when I complain. I have alredy bought 2.5 acres in Bobcaygeon, Ont and my nearest neighbour will be about 500' away, far enough so that we dont have to bother each other but close enough to borrow his snow blower.
And that suits me just fine.
Now I must come clean and tell you that I am actually Canadian
but I have been over here since being a child. So even though most of my family live over there including my Mum and 2 sisters I do feel like a foriegner when I go over. But I have also lived in Germany for just short of 5 years and that is a great country. The point I'm trying to make is that when your son finishes Uni he will have not just Canada and the UK to choose from but the whole of the European union as well. Now thats choice.

Now thats choice.I would not like to live where you are with the neighbourhood you have put up with. I have family in Lancs, but they live in some nice villages. I must admit I was choosy where I moved my family to when we returned to the UK. I spent last year working in Gateshead, but decided that we rather stay in a sleepy Oxfordshire village. I changed jobs to stay in the same area. The most recent crime we had was a neighbours cat was killed by a wild badger, but he did not last long as he got hit by a car.
I lived in rural Ontario in a 1905 farmhouse with 1.7 acres of land until 2 years ago. We loved the house and location. I had a 30 inch 11hp snowblower. It was dam cold at 06:00 clearing 300 feet of driveway and I have never been so cold in my life. We came back to England to have more time together as a family( 6 weeks leave instead of 2/3 weeks and not having to work excessive hours week after week). I agree the extra salary and company car is a bonus for us and not the main reason for leaving Canada.
Being Canadian I see why you want to return Ontario, to your country of origin and where your family is. We did not realised that its a lot different living on the other side of the Atlantic than being a few hundred miles away from your close family and friends. At least now we can jump in a car in go places in a few hours instead of a days flight and thousands of dollars in fares.
My sons are lucky as you said as they can get jobs in the UK, Canada or mainland EU. I been contacted about jobs in France, Germany and Japan in the last few months and will work overseas again once my sons are at Uni or working, but want to retain a home in the UK.
I hope you return home goes well.
