I hate the whole the gimmick. Difficult and unsightly. Can't they do stickers or scratch cards like normal fast food places.

I've just calculated that, if the average Tim Horton's customer stopped going there 3 times daily then, in 8.56 years, with the money they'd saved, they could afford a brand new base model Rav4 at today's price.

I adjust your calculation for realism from 3 times daily to 5 times per week. On that basis it would take 35.92 years to buy the RAV4.

Marketing. The point is to stand out and not do what normal fast food joints do.

Now if they really wanted to stand out, they should make good coffee.

Nope still not tempting enough to go and buy their coffee. I either take it from home or meet for a 'posh' coffee.

I've won the opportunity to try again pretty much every time. But then I only go there 5-6 times a year.

A guy from work won the car, back in 2010.

Apparently, you don't win the car. You get a free lease for a year, with the option of taking the lease on when it's up. Ironically, the guy that won this privilidge was also called Rav.

I have heard that thus lease talk is an urban myth?

No mention of lease here:

A) Forty (40) 2013 Toyota RAV4 vehicles. Approximate retail value in Canada is estimated to be $32,000 CDN each before any applicable taxes and includes Freight & P.D.I. The approximate retail value in the U.S.A. is estimated to be $30,000 USD each before any applicable taxes and includes dealer and processing fees.

Maybe people complained

I recall this from a while back:

"In 2006, a 10-year-old girl found a Tim Hortons cup in the garbage. She asked an older child to help her roll up the rim and found out she had won a $28,000 car.

The parents of the girls fought a bitter lawsuit about who should get the car, which was further complicated when a school custodian claimed the cup was actually his. His lawyer asked the court to do a DNA test on the cup’s rim to prove it.

In the end, the court awarded the car to the 10-year-old because she was the one who handed in the winning cup."

Inserting the word 'rim' into your marketing campaign probably isn't the best idea?...Although it does go some way towards explaining the bad taste their product leaves in your mouth.
