Rogers Cell phones
 

Does anyone know if a Rogers cellphone will work in England or do you have to phone Rogers and arrange for it to work - or something? Can you buy a UK sim card and use this in the Rogers phone in England? My sister has a Rogers phone and she says it works for her in the UK, NewZealand etc. but that you have to pay roaming and long distance charges. I thought if the UK sims would work in the phone, that would be a cheaper way to have the convenience of a phone while over there.

I used my Rogers cell phone in the UK with no problems, only the bill when I got home was a huge shock ($400ish I was only there 10 days!) I didn't call them just turned it on when I got to Heathrow and it worked fine.
Not sure if Rogers phones are locked or not and therefore not sure if you could simply put a UK SIM in there. Would definitley be a cheaper option though.

Mine worked just fine in the UK and France but it is expensive. $1 a minute in the UK and $2 a minute in France if I remember correctly. Ok for emergency use but not for chatting.

Almost certainly cheaper - you can get sim cards for free or very little in the UK.... You'll need to unlock your phone though first...

My blackberry didnt work in the UK to send texts, nor did MOH's pay as you go Rogers phone. Also for text messages.

My Rogers Pay as you Go didn't work in the UK.

you need to get it unlocked to use a UK sim, typical canadian way, pay extra for everything. About 30 dollars is the cheapest i have seen an unlocking service here.

I love the Rogers payg simcard... the cheapest way to go mobile in Canada (especially if you pick up the Rogers payg simcard from Costco).

It works fine in an unlocked UK mobile cellphone and provided you stick $100 on at a time, you don't have to fuss about using the balance within a given time limit.

However, it doesn't work outside Canada, so I just swap the simcard for a local payg one when on my travels.

Yes, I have discovered it won't work. I went into Rogers and they told me that roaming won't work in the UK on one of their pay as you go phones. You have to get a contract. Also, he says the phones are locked. Anyway, I have a Sasktel phone and I don't want to sign on to a Rogers contract, so that is the end of it.

I am now looking to buy a phone on eBay. I did find a Samsung phone for 39 pounds, which included a 10 pound O2 credit. I probably don't want to talk much, but my granddaughter is desperate to be able to text her friends in Canada while we are there - and I said I would see what I could do - isn't that what grandmothers are for???

We both have Samsung phones so we thought if we got a Samsung, we wouldn't have to figure out the phone, as well as the money etc!

Can anyone recommend a good network? I think my sister has 02 or orange. Are they the best?

I used to use Mobile World from Carphone Warehouse. It's 15p/minute to call any UK numbers, but 5p/min to call Canada or the US or 6p/min to call Australia from the UK by mobile phone.

You can either just buy the SIM card or get a cheapish phone too from CW, and if you get the phone you can leave it with family when you come back so they have no excuse not to call ;)

your gd can send texts from a computer, presumably she will be glued to one when she is indoors. Otherwise she will be texting all the time and that to me is just bad manners if she is out with you.

Nope not spending extra money. I just went without. Didn't really need it anyway.

I would say if you are super desperate to have a phone whilst on vacation in the UK then pick the cheapest up form Tesco. This link sends you straight to the tesco direct site. I do remember seeing similar prices in store in the summer.

It works in the US - albeit at an extortionate rate, I learnt my lesson on that one!

How much was the sim card at Costco? I got mine off ebay...

one thing i haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet: although rogers operates canada's only gsm network, it's on a different frequency combination to the one in europe.

these days many european cell phones are triband (the two european frequencies and one of the north american two) - so for most europeans it's not a problem to use their own cell on their north american vacation.
given that canada is way behind in that regard check the compatibility of the cell phone before you buy it if you want to use the device in europe too.
