Rogers Cell phones
Does anyone know if a Rogers cellphone will work in England or do you have to phone Rogers and arrange for it to work - or something? Can you buy a UK sim card and use this in the Rogers phone in England? My sister has a Rogers phone and she says it works for her in the UK, NewZealand etc. but that you have to pay roaming and long distance charges. I thought if the UK sims would work in the phone, that would be a cheaper way to have the convenience of a phone while over there.

Not sure if Rogers phones are locked or not and therefore not sure if you could simply put a UK SIM in there. Would definitley be a cheaper option though. |
Re: Rogers Cell phones
Mine worked just fine in the UK and France but it is expensive. $1 a minute in the UK and $2 a minute in France if I remember correctly. Ok for emergency use but not for chatting.

Re: Rogers Cell phones
I love the Rogers payg simcard... the cheapest way to go mobile in Canada (especially if you pick up the Rogers payg simcard from Costco).
It works fine in an unlocked UK mobile cellphone and provided you stick $100 on at a time, you don't have to fuss about using the balance within a given time limit. However, it doesn't work outside Canada, so I just swap the simcard for a local payg one when on my travels. |
Re: Rogers Cell phones
Yes, I have discovered it won't work. I went into Rogers and they told me that roaming won't work in the UK on one of their pay as you go phones. You have to get a contract. Also, he says the phones are locked. Anyway, I have a Sasktel phone and I don't want to sign on to a Rogers contract, so that is the end of it.
I am now looking to buy a phone on eBay. I did find a Samsung phone for 39 pounds, which included a 10 pound O2 credit. I probably don't want to talk much, but my granddaughter is desperate to be able to text her friends in Canada while we are there - and I said I would see what I could do - isn't that what grandmothers are for??? We both have Samsung phones so we thought if we got a Samsung, we wouldn't have to figure out the phone, as well as the money etc! Can anyone recommend a good network? I think my sister has 02 or orange. Are they the best? |

You can either just buy the SIM card or get a cheapish phone too from CW, and if you get the phone you can leave it with family when you come back so they have no excuse not to call ;) |

Nope not spending extra money. I just went without. Didn't really need it anyway. I would say if you are super desperate to have a phone whilst on vacation in the UK then pick the cheapest up form Tesco. This link sends you straight to the tesco direct site. I do remember seeing similar prices in store in the summer. http://direct.tesco.com/q/N.1999105/...esultSort.y=12 |

Re: Rogers Cell phones
one thing i haven't seen mentioned in this thread yet: although rogers operates canada's only gsm network, it's on a different frequency combination to the one in europe.
these days many european cell phones are triband (the two european frequencies and one of the north american two) - so for most europeans it's not a problem to use their own cell on their north american vacation. given that canada is way behind in that regard check the compatibility of the cell phone before you buy it if you want to use the device in europe too. |
Re: Rogers Cell phones
I am not buying one here. Waste of money. I will buy a UK phone - either on eBay or when I get there.
On a slightly different topic, can anyone tell me if there are lots of wifi points at Heathrow? What about in cities in the UK? My granddaughter says she can email using her Ipod Touch, which would be a decent alternative - I assume email is as quick as texting. |

The alternative is paid access from someone like The Cloud - http://www.thecloud.net/for-you/pay-as-you-go They have a monthly subscription option that looks a lot cheaper, but presumably there's a minimum period of commitment... These have pretty good coverage and you'd find access in all major cities and most towns... |

It works in the US - albeit at an extortionate rate, I learnt my lesson on that one!

In effect, free. You pay for the amount of call-time credit only. The Rogers store at the mall would have charged for the sim too; then I happened to be in Costco (Calgary NW) and enquired. I bought $100 of airtime and paid $100 plus the tax and it works great in Alberta and BC, but didn't connect to any service provider (extortionate or not) across the border in Montana.

Re: Rogers Cell phones
I don't pay for incoming texts. I pay $10 a month for unlimited texting and for that price I can text to or receive texts from anywhere in the world. However, this is with Sasktel and its CDMA technology that will not work in the UK - otherwise I would just have taken my phone with me!!
The thing I find the worst about Canadian phone companies is the fact that they will not allow you to unlock any phone. I was told by Jump.ca that it is actually illegal in Canada to unlock a phone. However, someone else told me that they think its protectionism by the phone companies - and not something that is illegal. My son bought a US CDMA phone on eBay and he had to shop around before he could find someone who would activate it on the Sasktel network. He was told that they could get into trouble if it was discovered that they had activated a phone that was not bought from Sasktel. I think that is ridiculous. He did find someone who activated the phone, but it seems to me that they make money from the contract not from a one time payment for a phone. I am not saying this kind of thing is limited to Canada, but it really annoys me that nowadays companies do things for their own benefit - and to heck with whether its what the customer wants! |
