Road trip to the states...
#1
We quite fancy taking a road trip down into the states in a month or so. Thinking of heading for Vegas which google earth says is about a 24 hour drive away from Calgary, so thinking we could do this in 3 days of heavy 8 hour drives.
Has anyone done a road trip like this before?
Any tips for the long journey?
Is there anything worth stopping off to see on the way? (think weird and wonderful)
Are there any recommendations for hotel stops on the way?
Cheers

I've never done that trip so can't make any recommendations for stops or anything.
But it should be a breeze an eight hour drive is not what I would consider heavy.
We often make the trip to Vancouver Island in one go, 12 to 14 hours including ferry.

You could detour to Jellystone park to find Yogi and Boo Boo
You have to go through Salt Lake City, you could go and trace your family tree. The Morons are collecting family history from all of the world, I use familysearch often.
Let someone else drive, put your feet up and enjoy the run.
When you get to Vegas, you can party and party and party
Enjoy

We hope to be doing a trip to the US next year, always assuming of course that we wont have as many visitors next year as we had this year and it will leave some time for us to go and do our thing ! People think we have been running a B&B this year

I drove out to Vegas, with a vegetarian. We were in a convertible so we pressed on to California and drove in the surf. On the way back we stopped in a bar in Colorado and acquired an American; she lives here now. So, beware, what happens on the road from Vegas doesn't stay on the road from Vegas.

Where there are some amazing sights, it's like another planet in some of the National parks.
Have a great trip

Thanks for the suggestions so far...keep them coming!
We thought it would be nice to take a little vacation that doesn't involve members of the family staying with us and us having to use our vacation time to show them around because they are completely dependent!!! Also, we tend to do the same old sites with all of them because its their first time over here e.g. Banff, Jasper, Icefields Parkway, etc.
(I digress a little here I'm afraid.....example: parents stayed with us and we had to take the hire car back one morning but got held up downtown because the Stampede was on. Returned three hours later to starving parents who couldn't work out that entering "200" in the most simplest microwave would cook their porridge for them. When questioned as to why they didn't use the toaster for some toast or go for regular cereal and milk they just shrugged their shoulders and said they were hungry!)

I know the feeling - just the offer to do a meal now and again would help. I do not expect anything special as I know what it is like working in someone elses kitchen, but at least if the offer is there it makes you feel better. Oh and how about a cup of tea/coffee every now and then.

No advice just a huge amount of jealousy - would love to go on a big sightseeing road trip!
Have a great time all of you and post the pics when you get back
