Ripoff beer prices

Just listening to Smooth Radio out of the UK online and they're running an ad. about a case of 30 Carlsberg for 14 quid. What's that, 20 bucks?

Here, in the Sobey's Liquor flyer they're charging $38 for a 24-pack of that Kokanee gnat's pi$$.

Are we being majorly ripped, or what?

Welcome to Canada eh. When was the last time you bought any cheese?
Insured your car lately or got a new cell phone contract?
Hey at least gas (petrol) is cheaper.

The only saving grace eh!

Add to the list of expensive items is 'property tax', whether you pay it through home ownership or its in with the rent you pay recouped by your landlord.

The UK other than the price of petrol does appear to be a tad cheaper cost of living & of course cheap hols & flights to the continent

Canada is not the place to be if you want low prices.

Having come from the US the
only thing I find less expensive is Healthcare.

It's why living near the border is essential to some people.

Booze is a rip off and not worth buying.

As someone who's life was devastated by an English drunk driver, I'm happy when it's expensive and not sold in corner shops. I believe it should be zero tolerance for drinking and driving.

But what has that to do with the price of fish or even beer? And who's is incorrect.

Edit: This http://britishexpats.com/forum/maple...ovince-705589/ is quite an old thread but of enduring interest to Canadian beer drinkers.

Depends on price per litre doesn't it. Kronenbourg is currently going for around £1.90 litre on special.

Err... From that last set of stats I looked at Drink driving is much worse in Canada

Price and availability isn’t a critcal factor in drink driving,

The statistics of each country are irrelevant. People are being maimed and killed in both jurisdictions and zero tolerance is essential if any reductions in deaths and injuries is to be attained.

Zero tolerance will not stop drink driving, only education from a young age will.

But you'll find incidents far lower in Ontario. Oddly the province that people tend to complain about being too expensive etc.

The stats are relevant, if the DUI is lower in places with less restrictions and lower prices, shows the high prices in Canada are just a cash grab with no effect on drinking or driving drunk.

I bought a nice beer at Superstore in Calgary,Full Nelson organic IPA 8% ,it was $4.99 for 650ml bottle .Its more expensive than say Kokanee but I like the micro brewies or craft beers than the mass produced beers.

If that were true, and I doubt that it is, it would only reflect differences in enforcement and reporting. As an owner of a lot of roadside verge I know that driving, drinking, and flinging the empties out of the window is usual in Ontario. That wasn't the case in the UK in my lifetime; we just don't have the culture of drinking at the wheel the way Canadians have now and Americans did in the past.

I've no idea how one might measure the relative incidence of getting into a vehicle and driving it while already drunk or stoned but bottles/cans flung per mile seems like a good measure of the relative incidence of getting drunk while driving a vehicle.

Just to add to that, it might be the right time to invest in alcohol now before prices go up further, especially for those who can't afford property:drinkwine:

Establishments were able to sell alcohol dirt cheap in Alberta (specials such as 25c draught beer, $1 shots etc) until the provincial government introduced minimum pricing per unit in 2008.

I believe their claim was to curb binge drinking.

Alas, it would have been "Formerly Proud Calgarian" as now you need to mortgage a kidney to get a 12oz sleeve of beer.

[BC Only, obv.]

If you want European stuff, 5% Grolsch and 5% Carlsberg are $1.69 for a 500ml can in BC Liquor Stores at the moment.

There's also Dab, Bitburger, Holsten and a few others on offer too.

Makes the local stuff look expensive...

A least in the UK it has become totally socially unacceptable to drink and drive and the penalties are far more severe than they are here. Plenty of people in the UK with happily call the cops if they see a drinker get in to the driving seat.

Canada needs the same 'caught tonight, banned from driving for 18 months tomorrow' regime that the UK has.

Canada is far too soft on ALL crime. As an aside, I see the Surrey Six are claiming compo for being put in dirty cells and being a bit lonely today...Diddums.

You can usually find one pukka European lager at $2/can in the beer store. So yes, the local brews are expensive- and I'm talking Molsleebatts let alone anything actually good.

Oh do stop that! We had some man here who ran over his own toddler with a snow blower and killed the poor kid...nobody is trying to ban snow blowers. The world is full of fools and you will never be able set and set of rules to ban twits and people who just don't, and can't, think. I am sorry you had a bad time - the demon drink and engines are a bad mix....my cousin went out shooting rabbits on his own property and did so on a sand dune...no more cousin! But I'm not anti bunny.

Zero tolerance of allowing people to breed who are quite incapable of thought might be a good option...but we'd probably all die out....haven't you ever done something that you've more than a little regretted, and thanked the powers that be that it all turned out right in the end?

Gosh my list is endless:blink:

My top three might be.....

Don't hitch hike home when somewhat younger.....especially when you've had a few...it will end in tears...usually yours - something I did endlessly

Don't ever mix alcohol and your work environment....you might become frightfully honest...

Never think that the drink that makes you feel good also makes you invincible....you cannot become the Queen of the Bouncy Castle or Trampoline....your time has gone for that...and you are so much the better for it.

My list could fill a tome pretty quick....lots of them involve no alcohol, or legal or illegal substances...but were probably not the best life choices.

Taxing beer to death is a joyless, miserable 'thou shalt not' step, which is becoming far too attractive as a mindset....education is a far better route than the pious one.

While I agree with your view on taxation, I don't think the mindset is becoming more attractive, not here anyway; Ontario governments have always been joyless, miserable and pious. There's nothing cradles won't try to legislate.

DAB was at $1.85 last night in the beer store; mind you the shelf was empty so I settled for a DAB Maibock. 7% at about $2.50. Excellent piss per pence.
