Default Ride on Lawn Mowers

Hi peeps,
Can anyone recommend one. I'm gonna have about an acre of grass to cut eventually and will need to get myself one. Has anyone bought one recently that they can recommend. I don't want to spend too much so may have to look at a 2nd hand ones. Dare I mention that Walmart do one for $1200, anyone got one?
Makes and models would be useful.
Thanks in advance
Stevo

I'm sorry Steve - but it's only the 22nd March. My neighbours and I are still discussing the merits of snow-blowers at this time.

Come back to us in May ...

I did think that would be the answer I would get, especially as we are due to get some more snow tonight.
Perhaps the last couple of days of melting snow and sunny skies has played havok with my brain. Or I'm just wishing this bloody snow away!!

Oop sorry, forgot I was on the wifes profile!!!

Hi, I used to sell these and chainsaws etc back in Scotland, please dont buy one from ruddy Walmart, remember you get what you pay for.

Good ones are Toro(not too expensive), Kubota(bit more expensive), we always found the best engines to be Tecumseh, more reliable and powerful, so if you do manage to find a cheaper one, if it has a Tecumseh engine it might be worth a try......good time to buy, I have seen specials already

I bought a John Deere second hand from the vendor of the house I bought 15 years ago. It's over 20 years old now and I've never had a serious problem with it. The model is a Hydro 175. Don't go near Walmart or Canadian Tire IMHO.

My experience of owning a John Deere X300 for a couple of years has been very positive. Having a dealership that stocks parts, and that can come out and service/maintain if you're not mechanically minded might be a positive point to bear in mind.

We have a Kubota 60", great machine.

Not impressed with Toro. Best engine I found next to Kubota diesel is Briggs & Stratton, but higher end than Tecumseh. The only Tec I had was nothing but problems. Used to Have B & S on Haytor in the UK and they were great.

We bought ours from Kents, off the top of my head can't remember what it is called and we can't get to it at the moment as the shed is frozen shut. Think it cost us $1400 The only real problem we have had it had to renew the belt a couple of times in 12 months but I think that was due to me abusing the machine I go a bit mad and try to mow stuff that really I shouldn't

WOW, we had nothing but problems with Briggs & Stratton, the best Hayters were the ones with Tecumseh engines, the B&S were never out of the workshop, maybe the Tecumseh you got was a lemon!

Nope, my brother used to sell mowers and such like, I have always been a fan of B & S and he always said how good they were. He always thought of Tecumseh as a low end engine. The mowers with the Tec engines were always cheaper than the ones with B & S too.

Give it some real power and drop in a RR Trent 700. The lawn would be done in no time, in fact so would the whole street.
