Default rental advice needed

Hi All, We have only been here a few days but we are finding it sooo hard to find a family home to rent.I didnt expect it to be this difficult. We have been looking in the Salmon Arm areas and even up to Vernon.Anyone out there to point us in the right direction or know of anywhere availiable to rent ? We would prefer a long term rent but will look at all options for a family home. How did the rest of you all manage when you arrived here ? Is it possible to get a mortgage straight away and how ? Any help is appreciated as we are starting to get frustrated. Glad we made the move though at least.:curse::curse::curse::curse::curse::curse::c urse:

I got a mortgage with a well known bank within days of arriving here. Mind you I had relatives here, who were customers of the bank. Bank seemed satisfied that I was in very steady employment back in the UK, and was about to start a decent job with a local company. Remember, the risk is mainly against the property and not you. Your ability to make payments are the driving factor, as well as the amount of money you can "put down". Give it a shot, they can only shoot you!
Good luck.

We stayed in a motel for a month. Gave us time to figure things out and find a suitable rental house for another 6 months before eventually buying our own.

well that was our plan but there really are no rentals for a family here so we seem stuck at the minute.I know its early days but we want to get things moving and get settled somewhere so we can organise the kids school, work etc. FRUSTRATED is the word.

Have you tried a large 2 bed condo with Den maybe you can squeeze in there for a few months till something comes up in the local papers? I queezed 6 into a 2 bed basement suite, for 3 weeks it wasnt that bad! Air beds and sofa beds all can be squeezed in!

I remember that frustration. We had booked a vacation suite for 3 weeks and as that came close to the end we were having real trouble finding anything else especially short term as we were house hunting so didn't want to get stuck with a long term rent we couldn't get out of.
We got lucky as some people we knew from this forum "MK Murrays" had just bought a house with basement suite and let us rent out the suite even though they had only been in the house for a couple of days themselves, so it was a great weight off our minds and a big thanks to them.

Anyway just to say don't give up, keep asking around i'm sure something will turn up, even if you have to travel that bit further for a while.

Hi Glen,
congratulations on arriving, not quite on the subject, but I am new to this site, I am planning to immigrate to canada via a company you metioned in a previous post (student training and job placement)
Did you actually use this company or do you know anyone who has, I can't find anyone who has.
many thanks pcrawford

When I searched CRAIGSLIST + SALMON ARM + RENT, the only thing I found was a houseboat for rent. I'm serious. The town has a population of 16,000.

Are you based in Salmon Arm or elsewhere?

Hi, we have rented a cottage for the first 6 weeks after we arrive in May, although we will be in a different area to you, is this an option for you? I just typed in Cottages to Rent In ..... and googled. It is a more expensive option for sure, but gives our family some space and because we were renting for a longer period than a week, we were able to negotiate a reduced deal with the owner.

We have also been in touch with a main bank in Canada and filled out the mortgage paperwork from this end, and have been pre-approved for a mortgage before we arrive. As a newbie with no job though we have to put down at least 35% deposit, but assuming we find something sharpish, we should have no problem closing before our cottage rental runs out (she says with everything crossed!!)
