Your British passport will say British Citizen if you're born in the UK. It will not mention anything about dual nationality, and I don't believe you're required to notify them if you have dual nationality.
Apply for a new British passport using this form.
Notes on filling it out are found here.
A guide to photographs required is found here.
Any other information can be found at the FCO in Canada website, here.

Well I have now found out that, as a Permenent Resident of Canada, with a British passport, I must apply within the country I currently reside, ie Canada and yes, to Washington. It can take six weeks.

My son, who was born in Canada, is looking into getting a UK passport. Apparently he can get one because both my husband and I were born in the UK. However, he says that there is some deal about becoming a UK citizen and getting a UK passport that is different. I thought that once you had a UK passport you were entitled to everything that a UK citizen had -- but he said it looks like this is not so. Does anyone know anything about that?

Both of my adult children have British Passports. They were born in Canada and also have Canadian ones as do I.

I think maybe the FCO need to rephrase the wording.

Hello
To the person who's son wants to apply for a UK passport - if you google "British Consultate - Ottawa (or, as in my case, Toronto) you'll see a list directing you to the relevant website (its ukincanada or something). In that site, on the left, click on passports - you might find info there about the dual citizenship thing and also about registering his birth. Depends on when he was born. In my case, born during the 60's to a British father means I'm naturalised by birth. On the other hand, an e-mail to them might get you the answers you need.
To the folks out there applying for renewal passports and joining the "send it to Washington" train. I just went through all of that and managed to get confirmation that my package was delivered this morning in Washington.
Thought it was a goner when I read on the courier company's online tracking system that it couldn't be delivered. Found a "real" number for the embassy in Washington and got a real live body (!!!!!). She told me they were open.
Called the courier company and was told they couldn't get in because of police activity in the area. Later on today I discovered my package was delivered and signed for. That hurdle over, I now wait to either get it all sent back because I've apparently done something wrong, or, the positive of my new passport plus my original supporting documents and cancelled passport!
Apparently this new process is about streamlining and economizing, however, with the millions of Brits and dual citizens here in Canada, you'd think the UK Consulates/Embassies could be a little more helpful in getting our applications down there. This business of telephoning a toll free number and/or a 1-900 and paying them to answer your question is ridic! Big money grab!
I understand through reading some of these threads that at least Ottawa can tell you the status of your application. I might try that in a couple of weeks.
Fortunately I've got plenty of time before I fly across the pond to get this done and am keeping fingers crossed for success!
