Default Registering a birth in Canada

Hi Everyone,

I'm a regular poster in the USA forums, but this is my first foray into the Canadian threads. Be gentle!

I'm the author of some baby names books in the UK and my publishers have asked me to write one for the USA/Canada market. As part of my research I'm looking into how to register a birth in Canada, and I thought I'd get some feedback from people who actually live there before I send it off.

So, from what I've learned online, it seems to be slightly different for each province but basically boils down to the following:

1) Give birth
2) Recieve a Registration of Live Birth form from the hospital, midwife, doctor... whomever it was that witnessed the birth
3) Complete form
4) Send form off to local Vital Statistics office
5) Order birth certificate: some provinces allow this to be done online, and others want it in person or by mail

Anything I'm missing? Any experiences different to this? What happens inbetween registering the birth and ordering a birth certificate? How do you know if the registration was successful?

I'm very grateful for any help or suggestions. Thanks!

Can't help at all, I'm afraid - but I just want to make sure the "B" section of your book is fully loaded ....

I think sounds about right. The person delivering the baby has to fill in a 'Notification of Live Birth / Stillbirth' for every birth they attend. The registration office then matches the information they have from the birth with what the parents tell them. Any discrepancies are usually referred to the person who signed the form at birth.
