reasonable request- job posting
I just happen to be browsing the latest job offering on Charity Village.
One caught my eye. an events coordinator for the Toronto Vegetarian Association. As well as the usual list of requirements for the job, this one got me thinking Must follow a vegetarian diet (free of meat, fish and poultry or the flesh of any animal). Now I can accept that you are organising events that are for vegetarians and that serving up a steak would probably be considered quite tactless. I can even accept that you wouldn't be able to bring your ham sarnies into work, but insisting that you are a total vegetarian? What would they do if they catch you eating bacon on your day off? fire you? |

and and you were doing your bit to lower green house gasses ...... |
Re: reasonable request- job posting
I wonder how that requirement would stand up in a court?
I don't know the answer. |

I suspect this condition would be unenforcible in law, but if they had any sense they would just fire you for any of the thousands of casual reasons that people lose jobs here for ( ie "its just not working out") rather than state its because you are a meatatarian. |

TVA appears to be a Charitable organisation. |
Re: reasonable request- job posting
this is more of an idle curiosity kind of thing. I have visions of random meat testing, you know like some jobs require random drug tests :)
I have no intention of applying. |

Re: reasonable request- job posting
What about one's personal integrity. You would probably need to lie to get the job. I think that's a fireable offence in itself. It would be the same as working in say, an accounting role when on your application you "ticked" no to the question "have you ever been convicted of a criminal offence" when, in fact you had.

Obviously its supposed to be beholden upon an employer to try and help an errant employee with their addiction / gambling/ bacon problems, but Im sure that does not always happen... |
Re: reasonable request- job posting
My name is Atlantic Xpat and I have a bacon problem....

Re: reasonable request- job posting
What about "Vegetarians need not apply" for a job with some sort of meat organisation?
Here's a good slogan for such advertising....you can't beat meat. |

If so, I imagine you have another job lined up. |
Re: reasonable request- job posting
the notice board is in my office. I have already been consigned to the basement next to the dark room where noone can find my office without a gps unit.
it used to be a store cupboard |

Re: reasonable request- job posting
something like that. I do actually have a window. it is designated as our 'alternate exit"
it has bars on it. |
Re: reasonable request- job posting
Zoe, your office sounds like Mulder's in the "X-Files". Hope you do something secretive and exciting down there. Funny poster by the way.

Re: reasonable request- job posting
It depends on the role. If it were to do accounts, then being vegetarian is irrelevant. But if it's any kind of marketing or sales, then being vegetarian gives better insight and adds to credibility. I imagine that this is common in the charity sector.

One can discriminate if it would cause financial hardship on the company or is necessary requirement to do the job, such as a job requiring heavy lifting and the applicant could not lift due to a disability. |
Re: reasonable request- job posting
Would they insist on non leather clothing and purses etc? The shame of being seen with a non leather handbag
|
Re: reasonable request- job posting
Sounds like a job interview one should wear one's sealskin hat and boots for.;)

Totally different scenarios. They can ask that you not have a criminal record for bonding purposes, etc. But to insist that someone be vegetarian or vegan? There is no justification for that and it would never stand up in court. |
Re: reasonable request- job posting
It's slightly different, but Weight Watchers here were looking for a receptionist and they had an add that said applicants should have a healthy BMI and I wondered if they could get away with that?

The reality is that Weight Watchers would not want a very overweight person on their reception as it would give the impression that the product does not work. ;) Or a member of staff in a dental office with horrendous teeth... Or staff in the Apple back office only able to use Microsoft. It's the presentation and marketing of a product. Sometimes wrong and illegal, but even if they didn't put the words in a job ad, they would still hire to those requirements. :sneaky: |
