Drive to Regina in February on a weekend where the temperature is around the minus 30C range. Park your car overnight not plugged in and then wake up. Then go out to start the car and tell me if you needed one

Central Alberta not cold enough??? Have experienced those temps no problem, only ever plug the car in occasionally but I've never needed a timer

Re: Is this really necessary?
It only takes 2 or 3 hours to warm the engine up with a block heater so the idea is set the timer for 4:30 and save money on power by not plugging it in all night. I don't have the luxury of a plug for my car at home, and below -25 or -30 sometimes I have to boost it with a booster pack.
If we have a good cold snap we can go several weeks where it doesn't get above -30. When it warms up after that it feels great, even if it's still -20.

But the cars are always plugged in at work. Back when we first bought our Civic, I didn't have a heater cord on the first days of cold weather, and it did not like trying to start at -30C.

Only during the 1st winter here, were any of our winter cars given the luxury of the garage, they have all been outside ever since, during the day and over night, we'll use a block heater maybe for a week or two during the cold snaps, but I think using a timer is a little OTT. I certainly would not use a heater if the car was sat in a garage, heated or otherwise

I never used a timer, but then again I usually forgot to plug the car in. (when I lived in Edmonton) but the car always started.
