This is the mystery though. According to the guardian report the bank contacted the recipient, he refused to pay it back or allow them to take it back and the bank washed its hands, used the confidentiality argument for not releasing the details of the recipient and offered a £25 compensation (for the loss of £193,000).

The customer who should have had the money had to hire legal representation to get the bank to freeze the account of the person who got the deposit and then further legal costs were needed to get the deposit back. £46k in all I think were the fees.

It sounded like the police had zero involvement. No charges at all.

Without the doggedness of the customer, he'd have lost his inheritance and the other guy would have gained it.

I've just read the Guardian report again -

No one is legally entitled to keep money that has been wrongfully credited to their account. But compelling them to return the money, particularly if it is spent, is another matter. Barclays, in common with other banks, will not even provide the name of the person who has received the cash, unless it is instructed by a court.

So yes, it sounds like it's a civil matter rather than a criminal one. Which of course means you have to take legal action yourself. Very wrong, it's the same as stealing/robbery and should be a criminal offence.

This really sucks for this couple. Went to Thailand and a month into their trip, the man has a bad headache goes to hospital, turns out its a cancerous tumor, they file claim with their travel insurance which is denied due to pre-existing condition, turns out he went to a hospital in Canada with the "flu" and had a headache which was very likely the tumor, but they had no idea at that time it was a tumor but its enough for insurance to declare it pre-existing.

Sounds like he has a fairly limited window to fly back to Canada safely. Air Ambulance was quoted as $265,000.

'Funny', but after ctv news contacted the insurance company, the man's wife got a phone call from them saying that although their claim was 'still under review', they're going to do a medical evac for the couple anyway. Any bloody wonder people hate insurance companies. BTW, I got that info from the man's wife, she's posted it on his Go Fund Me page (link is in the article)

This is very relatable. Especially the haggling over a toaster that is for sale at $1

True down here in NZ also.
Garage sales were a new concept to us when we arrived here but we have now helped out with a few and the haggling over a $ item is astounding.
We actually have some stuff himself wants to sell but I am putting it off as I think I would have little patience with haggling thing.

Being able to get into the media certainly does seem to help companies do the right thing, also helps get go fund me going... If only everyone had access to the media for help, but media of course picks and chooses so not like its even a viable option for most.

Good they are at least going to get the man home, at least once back home their healthcare will be covered by their provincial plan.

Looks like an Air Ambulance is likely in Thailand now, was due to arrive early Wed local time.Seems his considered has gotten worse so doctors are going to place a tube in his brain to try and reduce swelling and have to wait to see if it works.
