Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Yeah for the most part they do, you know its something that can happen but not something you sit and worry about.

do people who live there just get used to the risk? I remember the big one with all the broken roads... can’t imagine living there just waiting for it to happen again. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
California just got hit with a 6.9 (been downgraded from 7.1) The 6.4 on Thursday is now considered a foreshock.
USGS lists it at a 7.1 again, so seems to be a 7.1. Seems it was 7.1 then downgraded to 6.9 then upgraded back to 7.1 1 in 10 chance of a larger quake occurring according to Cal Tech scientist on local LA news. |

From VRT, the main English language news provider in Flanders:
Man gets lifetime driving ban for 23rd time, and now also a prison sentence A 45-year-old man from Zonhoven had received a lifelong driving ban 22 times, but flouted the ban on each occasion. Now, after getting caught a 23rd time, he will also get a prison sentence. The man was caught drink-driving by police, and at the same time he had used energy-boosting amphetamines. He got a lifelong driving ban (again), but this time also a prison sentence. The man needs to pay a fine of 8,000 euros and his girlfriend's car - which he was using when he was caught red-handed - will be confiscated. It remains a small group, but unfortunately the group of people who just ignore a driving ban, is growing. "In fact, we should take action more quickly", says traffic psychologist Ludo Kluppels of the road safety organisation VIAS Institute. He refused to comment on this particular case, but said that people should receive counselling from the second or third offence. "Why don't they stick to the rules? Why are these rules important? And what will we do to make sure he or she will not ignore the rules again? If you tackle these issues, there is a bigger chance that things will improve." In theory, one can get a two-year prison sentence when caught driving when a ban applies, but this punishment is (almost) never inflicted. "For me, this shouldn't happen at a first or second flouting of the ban, but from a third time it's a good idea." |

If there is anything I miss the most, it's Mexican food, So. California style, there is simply nothing remotely close to it here.
|
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Depends so much on personal taste.
I've had California Mexican food. I've had Tex Mex Prefer Tex Mex to California Mex But I prefer BC Mexican over them both. |

Las Margaritas – Las Margaritas https://www.opentable.ca/las-margaritas?page=3 Las Margaritas has been serving up Mexican dishes inspired by Southern California & the Baja since our doors opened in 1994. |

Jsmith has mentioned that he doesn't like spicy food either, but not all Mexican food is necessarily spicy. I've never had California Mexican food (only spent one night there and didn't leave the airport) but I'm curious. Jsmith, what are your favourite So Cal Mexican dishes? Please post us some links or recipes or pictures. I try to replicate the dishes I liked in Old Mexico, and would like to see what they eat on the Left Coast.
The photos are from a place called lolitas, I often ate there and primarily where my parents went for Mexican although a different location, there are others who are similar, pretty much a Mexican place or taco stand on every corner, sometimes more then one lol. Every taco shop as their own twist so many things have the same names but slightly differing tastes. most of these places are using tortillas they either make or made locally there and nothing like what you can buy in stores here, I lack the culinary expertise to recreate the taste.

Me too. I try but there is something about a good tortilla I'm still missing. In Oliver it's better because a couple of stores have tortillas shipped in from the states for the Mexican agricultural workers, so I try to take advantage of that while I'm there.
The ones I find here are thicker I find in the stores where there they are thinner, its an art though to make them. My step mom is skilled at it, she makes her own when cooking she can recreate just about everything on a taco stand menu. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Never really understood what a tortilla is. A crunchy envelope to put food in or a softer pancake/crepe to wrap things in.
What mild stuff is there? I would try something for myself and then ole husband could add something spicyish if needs be. I think salad at least . Beans? Not keen on beans. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Because you use an un-greased griddle or skillet to cook tortillas, there's a smoke aspect that might not go over too well in a rental space.. I've set off the smoke detector a few times doing it. This lady makes some nice ones:
