I don't think so. That would be 'little Hitler' which is also open to similar misuse.

I dunno, maybe you (general you) need to have done one of those jobs where the term is slung at those doing the job. The most obvious one is someone having to apply the rules for the greater part of their job, like a traffic warden or other parking attendant. They have a little power but are expected to use it. Of course, there may be some who relish using it.

I gave a few examples because in all walks of life there are situations where one could turn a blind eye or could reveal information one knows but it's not 'right' to do so.

Everyone just thinks that there are good reasons not to do so for their situation but someone else is a jobsworth.

While I'm in whingeing mode  it's the same as the other stereotypes. Milkmen clank their bottles (or cartons ) deliberately at 5.00am; dustmen leave rubbish strewn over the path and the bins thrown over; 'the taxman' is evil; postmen are lazy and can't read addresses; lawyers are grasping scoundrels; businessmen are all useless fatcats; secretaries are chatterboxes who sit around filing their nails (especially the male ones); any number of folk "don't know their arse from their elbow" etc etc..
Everyone believes them but in many cases the same lazy stereotypes are applied to their own field of work and they know them to be false. So what happened to "hang on a minute, it's not true that I carry out my job with sadistic fervour, in the rare moments when I actually have something to do other than drinking tea and counting my expenses...so maybe the same isn't true of people in other jobs similarly stereotyped..."

Exactly.

See, you get public information films on the telly showing the dangers of parking near a junction and we all nod and tut-tut at the thoughtless driver.

But then when "you" do it and the traffic warden tells you to move on you say "I'll only be two minutes" - and it only takes a few seconds for that to amount to loss of life or a lifetime of disability.

"I tell you, he was a right jobsworth, I was only popping in for a paper."

:frown:

Got a letter in the mail yesterday from the car rental firm we used in France saying that I was spotted via some traffic camera speeding and that I would be getting a fine:thumbdown::thumbdown: Not sure yet of the fine but based on the time of day I was either on a 110 km/h road or a 130 km/h road.

Last time I got a speeding ticket was in 2012 in Spain...same thing..traffic camera. Caught going 113 km/h in a 100 km/h zone and they sent me a fine...bloody jobsworths (just trying to connect it to earlier postings in this thread). No connection with my Ontario drivers licence or insurance.

Before that it was 1990 in Markham so I'm not in the dangerous drivers category.

All 3 tickets on manuals. Unfortuanately in that regard I've had a manual for the last 3 years here in Ontario so I could be due for a local ticket.

My husband just received a fine from France from December, he was doing 59 in a 50, it was a fair cop and we expected something as we saw the camera flash.

God yes!! I hate to see large kids sat in the trolleys for that very reason. Disgusting...make them walk. I also hate it if the cashier puts my groceries in the bit where the little kids sit. Please don't put my groceries where kids with dirty nappies/diapers sit. I hate to say it but it seems to be a common practice with my favourite store...Costco.

What kind of groceries would one buy at Costco that aren't either wrapped in packaging or supplied with a disposable skin?

are the "groceries" that you purchased at Costco that went into that filthy dirty shopping (diaper ridden) cart contaminated when they are wrapped & finally end up in your cupboard?

What about all those germs on your hands from the shopping cart handle that you contaminated everything that you touched, including oinks 'Hot Dog' that had condiments on the hot dog from the contaminated condiment dispensers

They should shut down Costco just for the contamination of everything in the store starting with those shopping carts , the touching & passing along all those germs... 'Contagion'

I dropped a bag of frozen shrimps in the Costco car park. I picked them up, tossed them in the boot of the car where, I expect, a CSI technician could find traces of diesel, petrol and household rubbish, and drove them home. Subsequently, I made shrimp and grits with them and no one died. No one died because, if the food is in a bag, it doesn't matter if the bag gets dirty - we don't eat the bag. Similarly, if the food is unbagged but you don't eat the skin, like a pineapple, it doesn't matter if the skin gets dirty.

Ebonhawke Feb 23rd 2017 3:28 pm

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

Regarding the great cart debate, two exceptions for me, would be peppers and tomatoes. Since I'm usually only picking up or two, I don't put them in the individual bags, as I think it's wasteful. I do wash them thoroughly before use, and I also tend to use the hand-carried basket rather than the wheeled cart.

Frankly, I'd be more worried about all the germs that you're coming into contact by simply touching the handle of the carts, then what the food may be exposed to - in most cases, you're cooking the food beforehand :)

What is the 'mustn't let a germ touch me' generation coming to?

My grandchildren play with sheep, chickens and pigs and play with a dog that thrives on eating sheep poo and rolling around in it. They are still alive.

When I was young, we didn't have disinfected McDonalds play areas to amuse us but we did have gutters to play in, the kerbs being just the right height for little beggars to sit on. We scooped up horse poo left in streets for the garden and we played in bomb sites, fished the local ponds for sticklebacks and collected caterpillars and bugs. Surprisingly I'm still alive. I put down my good health to the resistance I built up when I was young and I'm allergic to nothing.

We can be a little over-protective when we try to do the right thing sometimes.

I used to eat raw potatos with soil clinging, dug up with my grubby paws from the bottom of the garden, rhubarb nicked from the garden (no doubt complete with the horse droppings my Dad used to put on them) unwashed, screw of sugar in brown paper filched from the kitchen to dip it in.. always with soil laden hands! I've even been known to eat a worm or two in my very young days. I've no allergies either!

I too remember fishing for sticklebacks (and clearing out the very dirty stream in my garden, complete with frogspawn), picking up frogs, catching stag beetles, catching king newts (which apparently my dog ate) and generally not being shouted at for any of those things. The concept of danger from germs never crossed my mind.. and I still don't worry about them overly.

Audio!

I'd be surprised if you knew him, the anglicised version of his name is unusual. It's as if the immigration guy said "what's your name in English?" and he looked around, saw an air conditioner or similar appliance and took the word from that. (This assuming there aren't two people in the office with shoes like that).

Like so many that use their cell/smart phone while doing their thing in the 'public toilets', even if they wash their hands & use a "paper towel or bog paper' to open the restroom door

Or another one, how many after being to the Lav (with or without the cell/smart phone in hand) share the TV remote control, all while sharing/eating hand foods with other people ... sandwich, popcorn, chips, wings, pizza etc

A friend of mines girlfriend had this paranoia about picking up germs from everywhere.

Kindly he pointed out how many germs are certainly on the button to operate pedestrian lights in London, meaning that unless she had gloves or there was someone else around, she had to look for zebra crossings...

how does one avoid using the duvet in a hotel room?

scrubbedexpat091 Feb 24th 2017 5:42 am

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread

Most hotels have a sheet on the bed that can be used as a blanket or you can call front desk and ask for an extra sheet.

This request is quite common.

Duvet is cleaned once or twice a year or as needed.

Where sheets are washed each time someone checks out and a new guest is checking in.

Some chains (typically the higher end brands) do wash the duvet cover each new guest but its far from industry standard yet.

hiatal hernia which in turn causes really bad acid reflux along with some other things.

That's what my last surgery was; so along with the umbilical and ventral ones I've got mesh from top to bottom. Luckily acid reflux isn't a real problem, but I can get cramps across where they're sewn in that literally paralyse me without warning. If you've been on the stuff for awhile your Dr might want you to get blood-work and check your kidney function. Never hurts to ask.
