Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Not sure what kind of ants they are, but they don't seem to like sugary stuff, they ignore the traps, both types we bought, but drop cheese, or such and they come out like crazy, maybe some sort of ant that doesn't like sweets...?
Update: I think they are likely carpenter ants, the signs are there, debris around the floor where they hang out, swarmer with wings present, they are bigger and look like the photos on various pest control websites. We have notified the manager, but they may not fix it anytime soon, government anything isn't very quick nor efficient, considering they still haven't sent anyone to fix the heat. :sneaky: Manager says there is nothing he can do about the ants, yeah right but not much one can do in government housing, the rules are not the same as private rentals, I'll just hire a pest control company myself when we have the funds to do so. Scratch that, no point in hiring a company just for one unit, in multi housing buildings just treating 1 unit wont fix it, they will just come back as chances are they are living in more than one unit. |

If it is a wooden structure (I think you said it was), carpenter ants could be a big problem as they make their nests in wood. We saw lots of them outside around out house in NJ. We had Terminex in every month to keep them at bay…mind you I am a little phobic about bugs. :o https://www.canada.ca/en/health-cana...nter-ants.html |

A family member gets a lot of ants in one room, they come in from outside under the skirting board (baseboard) and seek out dog biscuits! Ant traps havent worked, they have put ant powder down outside but it doesnt do much either, they have to be careful what they use / where, because of pets. In the UK I used to use Diatomaceous Earth - you can buy 'food grade' DE at Canadian Tire and other stores.. the food grade varieties won't harm pets, so I've suggested they try that this year. :) https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/searc...aceous%20Earth https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/british...e0e07f462b.jpg |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
This old style heating system seems difficult to fix.
The maintenance person came 2 days ago and replaced the thermostat and some valve in the pipe, but now while the living room heat is off, the bedroom is now blasting heat, but only 1 thermostat for the entire unit, so another maintenance request in. Everyday is getting warmer, and now we got to move the bed to the living room as the bedroom is too hot, and its no easy feat moving a king size mattress around. |

Agreed I handwash some things, but IMO the bathroom is a better place to dry them. Hang them in the shower or bath to drip dry.
Of course you can get much moisture out by wringing the clothes out in a towel. |

Door Dash lets you sign up, go through background check, add banking info, then tell you your area is full and they will add you to their waitlist.
Would be nice if they tell you that upfront before wasting time on the process to sign up. |
Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Expect some furniture to go up in price, sofas and reclining chairs to be exact if they are made in China or Vietnam, as Canada places temporary tariffs on such items. CBSA say's the countries are dumping product into Canada,
The tariffs for Chinese manufacturers range from 20% to 295% and Vietnam they range from 17% to 101%. Wont be good for consumers, and retailers may further suffer, especially smaller independent retailers. https://globalnews.ca/news/7870710/s...xoQctswFhIkSoE |

Clothes air dried last longer than ones dried in a dryer. Clothes washed by hand and hung to dry last a lot longer .................. though it is harder work than popping down to the laundry  |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
Air drying clothes increases the humidy, therefore making it feel hotter. :D

We have never had a dryer in this house since we bought it 49 years ago, couldn't afford to buy one at first (the previous owners took all the appliances with them), and then found we didn't need one. There is a laundry area in the basement with hanging lines. It is large enough to hang all the laundry for 1 week. The other half of that part of the house has been separated for a workshop/storage area. The laundry drying and humidity (if any) does not affect the main floor of the house, or the other half of the basement that is family room and OH's "office". Daughter found out the difference in how long clothes last after she married and used a dryer constantly. Even using the dryer on low heat, there was a huge difference. Re not buying new clothes for 3½ years ............ I'm wearing still some sweaters and tops that are over 20 years old, and still in good shape. I do buy new clothes, bu mostly in different sizes or because I'm sick to death of a 20 year old top  I obviously have never bought "up-to-the-minute fashion" items  |

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
I buy the old cheapo fashion from places like Target in the US or elsewhere in the US, so my clothes buying coincides with visits to California, more bang for the buck, same with shoes.
As for humidity and clothes, apartments being smaller can become more humid quicker with less wet stuff, even a shower can raise the humidity quite a lot, as can cooking liquids on the stove to and the other issue in apartments is space its pretty limited so you don't want clothes hanging all over the place taking up what little living space you already have.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
We have lived in apartments without air conditioning, and with once a week allotted laundry time, unless you can get into a vacant slot. There were usually a few of those vacant time slots, but the times usually didn't work for us.
When necessary, I washed a few items out, hung them in the bathroom, turned on the fan and closed the bathroom door. It worked! Granted washing large items, such as sheets and towels, or a lot of clothes would not work, but you can wash and dry quite a lot that way without a problem. |

On an electric vehicle how is the heat for the heater generated, and does having the Heater/AC in operation affect the range of the vehicle on a full charge? thanks in advance.

Re: Random stuff - the anything else thread
If anybody's interested in Vancouver there's a pub patio that does happy hour from 2pm to 6pm. They have lots of food specials but the cool but somewhat dangerous thing is that they have pints Fat Tug IPA on for $5.00. Although from last week's experimentation (HID had gone away for a couple of days) four hours on the Tug is . . . well suffice to say, I couldn't really remember anything after 4:30pm. :o I think moderation and some chicken wings are things to consider. But at least I only live 4 blocks away so I managed to walk home relatively unscathed, well until the next morning. Still it's a great place for cheap beer and snacks in this time of angst. An added bonus is you get to watch the Russian roulette electric scooter riders play with traffic.

Casimir says it’s believed the deaths are undocumented, though the Secwepemc Museum’s archivist is working with the Royal British Columbia Museum to see if any records of the deaths can be found. They think there may be many more bodies to be found, as it was the largest Residential School in Canada, and had 500 students a year at times. Children were brought from many parts of BC to that school, and they know some also came from outside the Province. I'm not sure from what I read this morning whether they are actually going to dig up the bones or not. The grounds of the school are already named in memory of the children and are currently closed to the public. They are called the Missing Children, and they are only known about from family stories. Many children didn't return home after being at a residential school, but went to other places (ie big cities) and didn't make contact with family. Then there are these poor children who died and were buried without any recognition. A lot came out during the Reconciliation hearings. Similar cases happened at other Residential schools all across Canada (and possibly also at such schools in other countries ..... the US had a similar system of Residential Schools). It's going to be like the babies in the garden cases in Ireland, only much larger numbers. |

My neighbour got home last night from a week of bear hunting. I haven't talked to him yet so don't know if he got one. Normally I'd ask him to save me a steak, but they're usually pretty skinny in the spring after hibernation.
