Re: Rackoons!
They're cunning little b*****ds. There is not a great deal you can do to keep them out. They climb like Sherpa Tensing. All kind of products on the market to fight them but nothing too successful. If you have outside garbage bins you can buy racoon proof type, but I don't know if they're even that successful. Wait until you see a mother crossing the road with 4-5 baby racoons following. It's an Ohhhhhhhh experience. You would think butter wouldn't melt in their mouths until they get into your house/garage/garbage, then murderous thoughts engulf you.

Saw a couple the other night wandering down the road in front of our house, was suprised at how big they were. I mean I've seen them in a zoo, but out in the wild (of suburban Victoria lol) they appeared more in scale.

I've not seen any here yet - couple of dead ones on the road, but none walking about....
Do they hibernate for winter?

Dont be fooled by how cute they are, they can do a lot of damage in the wrong place.
Still, there are worse things to find in the back yard.

No, I was watching it from the back porch in the evening gloom after a neighbour tipped us off it was coming. Its a video capture, the video clip is in my gallery here somewhere..
It did pause briefly to check on the bedroom where our newborn was sleeping though

Or keep a pit bull....
Seriously, when I lived in Toronto they were a real problem in the back yard/garage etc. Then my wifes brother asked us to look after his dog for a few months. She was a cross between a Staffordshire bull terrier and and a chocolate lab however had the appearence of a pit bull type of dog. She awas a pussy cat really but she sorted out the Racoons in short order...and took a few wounds herself. Problem was keeping her away from the skunks...

We have deer very early on a morning, have bears destroying garbage bins last year, raccoons all the time....and we live in Coquitlam. Not even in the forest area but on a main road right beside the bus stop!
The downside is that we all have to keep our garbage in the basement.
Last week I heard on the radio that there was a puma/mountain lion spotted at the week-end in Port Moody too and it's stopped me from going for walks at present!

Re: Rackoons!
I've seen quite a number of raccoons around here in North Vancouver often at dusk trotting down the street. we had a mother raccoon and her 3 babies living in the holly tree next door ( they were so sweet). the babies were obviously just learning the ropes in climbing trees and they fell from the top of the tree to the floor quite often but they perservered, bless them! I haven't seen them since it got cold.
