Question re the ? and the !

This is not a criticism merely a question to try and satisfy my curiosity.:)

I have noticed a number of posters to this forum always leave a space between the end of a sentence and either the question mark or the exclamation point.

These same poster don't leave a space for the comma or the period (full stop).

Can anyone explain why?

I actually added lots of spaces in a pathetic attempt at comedy. It only looks like one in the post though, so it was a bit of a waste of time.

What is that in your avatar ? Is it one of those large 'cigar shaped objects' that you pilots like to talk about when you've hit the sauce?

Reading that I'm amazed to see things like this exist. Irony marks indeed....

There's something rather splendidly ironic about the idea of an irony mark. Isn't the whole point of irony that it's something of an in-joke at the expense of the uninitiated who don't "get it"?

But I can see why it would be needed in Canada and the US though.

I am lost - are you wanting folk to leave a space after a comma, or before? And why do you use exclamation marks? They're so bloody annoying.

What bugs me most on here is when folk don't use paragraphs; it makes it impossible to read what they're saying.

I find I have a regrettable tendency to overuse the winking smiley for just that purpose.;) I'll try harder not to use it !!!!!!! And use paragraphs!!!!!! And not so many exclamation marks!!!!!!! LOL At least it's nt txt spk. PMSL ??

There's a school principal I know that regularly uses 4 to 5 exclamation marks in their communications. It just makes them look like a twat.

Re: Question re the ? and the !

I get frustrated by those who constantly spell the same words incorrectly, and I'm not referring to mixing the English and US spelling up. These are the same people who get annoyed when one tries to point out the correct way to do it.

If one is not sure of the spelling, use the damn spell checker before posting. Then there's less need to edit afterwards.

No I don't want a space before a comma I want to know why some put a space before a question mark or exclamation point.

They do have a purpose whether they annoy you or not is beside the point. ;)

It was a 18th century term attributed to British navel officers who, while dinning at a Jamaican restaurant with its notoriously laidback service, would demand in an annoyed manner, that the waiter should "get his goat."

Why did they want his goat? Did it have their bill?

I think I do this sometimes. I think I started it when I thought there was just so much text, I thought it looked better with a wee space. :o

But really, there is no good excuse or good reason. :D
