Proof of funds
#1
Hi
Can any of you recent 'landers' help please?
When landing for the first time, it says you have to show proof of funds, which is fine. Do we need a bankers draft for the $16,000 or would a UK bank statement with equiviliat funds do?
Also it says you have to have a canadian address at the time of landing so they can send the PR card to it. However we are only renting an apartment for two weeks, as we need to return to the UK to finish up work contracts for 2 months and also on the CIC website it says you have to pick up your PR card in person, which they will hold for you for 180 days....
...confused you will be!

Canadian Street Address: If you're landing in Vancouver I can recommend an excellent forwarding mailing service which we used for our PR cards.
Proof of Funds: I just went to my bank a couple of days before we were due to land and got them to print off an up to date statement showing we had the funds. And I asked the bank lady at the counter to date stamp it and sign it which was no problem, they were happy to do that.
But when we got to Vancouver they didn't even ask for our proof of funds. But I still think you should have some document to show your funds, even if they don't ask for it, you need to have your paperwork in order just in case, it was probably just because of who we got on the day but some other official might have asked for it.

Oh I just noticed on your sig that you are landing in Vancouver.
Here is the mail forwarding company, they'll give you a street address in your own personal name and then forward your PR Cards on to you (and we had them send our SIN Cards as well).
You have to book the address for 3 months but that's ok because sometimes the PR Cards takes a while. And we requested international registered post for peace of mind, our cards arrived safe and sound.

Thank you so much for the information that is brilliant! Yep we are landing in Vancouver on the 26th June, and like this whole process, initially each stage looks confusing, but then as you get down to it, with the great help of people like yourselves it all becomes very simple!
Quite a few people have said that they were not asked for proof of funds but of course we will carry it with us as it is a requirement. One last question (honest!) were you asked about goods to follow when you landed?
Thank you!

We landed today and as we went through PNP we were not asked for proof of funds, we were asked if we had goods to follow ( we already had our things here)

You're welcome.

Goods to Follow List: No he didn't ask for our "goods to follow" list so I brought it up with him and he went away to find out and then came back and gave us a form with addresses downtown and telephone numbers to make an appointment. So I called and made an appointment and then went down there and processed it, it was very simple and easy.
Just a tip though, make sure you do that quite handy when you arrive because by the time I called they only had the day we were leaving available for an appointment, yikes! Luckily we made it in the morning (we were leaving later that day) but be sure to get onto that in the first couple of days of arriving.

I just gave the mail forwarding address as our street address for the cards. And he just asked "what's your Canadian address for the PR cards to be sent to." So I didn't say anything and just handed it over (already written down so he could copy it down correctly.)
You really don't need to say "this is my hotel" or "this is a company I'm using" -- just give the address when they ask for it. It's a street address you get with Accutype so it complies, (they wont accept po boxes).
Also, it takes about 10 days for your Social Insurance Cards to be processed so the Accutype mailing service is handy for that too, as an address for sending and then they'll forward it on for you like the PR Cards. Our PR cards took about 5-6 weeks to arrive.

Thank you soooooo much elizabeth, you have been amazingly helpful and put my mind at rest for a lot of things! Some really good advice that we will absolutely follow! Thanks once more

Hi ducktastic,
We weren't asked for proof of funds when we landed however what's been sufficient for a lot people is an online statement printout on the day or day before of landing
All the best.

The "proof of funds" is just that. You don't need to have the funds physically with you (banker's draft etc), but you may be asked to prove that you have those funds available. Available means they must be readily convertible to cash - for example, a bank account statement would do; a property valuation of a house you haven't sold yet would not.
Chances are you may not be asked for anything at all, it seems a bit hit and miss whether immigration officers request to see proof of funds, but it would be wise to have a suitable document available in case you get a stickler!
