Need a new TV for my rec room. Any recommendations? Not sure if I should go Plasma or LCD.

Re: Plasma or LCD?

one piece of advice we were given - if you have lots of windows, lcd better as less reflection.

but, another shop said plasma was far better and wouldn't recommend lcd at all!

we went with a samsung lcd and its fine for us - hd tv good, others not always so hot.

i am sure lots of people will be along with more advice (and more technical knowledge!).

Why not go along to a shop and have a look at some, and see which you like best? As far as I can tell, the technology for both have come on quite a lot since the early days now, so you'll probably be fine whatever you go for.

This was our issue and the lovely (really knowledgable actually) guy at the brick advised us ultimately to go for LCD as we wanted to use it for a large pc monitor too (:o), he advised that with plasma if we forgot to switch the pc off and an image was left on the screen it could burn the *insert correct tv screen little light things that make up the picture word in here* and we would completely mess it up.

Basically I think LCD have a longer life.

This ehelp website may help you decide.

When we bought our plasma TVs (37" for living room and 50" for basement) last year you could not get an LCD TV screen over 37". According to the above website they now go up to screen size 45".

We were told that if you will be using the Xbox etc, then LCD is better. Our boys have LCD TVs in the their rooms. :)

But this is the issue. I can see no difference in picture quality. Given that I will not be using the screen as a PC monitor the choice appears endless. In addition pricing variations are huge. I have no issue spending more if it can be justified!

If you plan keeping it for several years, LCD backlite is a lot easier to replace than blown plasma pixels.

Then just get the cheapest one that will look nicest with the rest of your furniture.

We viewed plasma and LCD side by side and couldn't believe the difference. I'm not techie, haven't a clue about these things but all the LCD ones seemed to have jaggy-edged ghost trails on moving images. Also we plan to put a chair in a corner and the viewing angle on a plasma is better for that.

Ended up with a Pioneer Elite plasma, very happy with it. I wouldn't have paid the sticker price in Canada for it though, got it for almost half in the US.

That must have been quite a while ago? Nowadays, those problems have been pretty much eliminated.

Even with the tax on top? Not something you could easily smuggle through the border :sneaky:

Plasma in my opinion gives a better picture quality and there is no concern over longevity these days, a decent plasma will run for something like 20 years even if it's on for most of the day.

The only thing against plasma is a) it uses more electricity and b) big and heavy and a pain in the arse to move anywhere.... If they don't bother you, go for a plasma, I recommend a Panasonic or a Pioneer.

You could do worse than this one :-

Caught you. We have to choose the bathroom fittings, carpet, and furniture before you get to blow the rest of the budget on boys toys :curse::wub::rofl::p
