and remember that montreal is also in an earthquake zone
As is Ottawa. And it's quite an active zone. I believe that there is a tremor on average every five days. They are small ones, obviously. I've noticed a couple, though.

Probably a bit of pillaging after the fact, assuming my 23rd floor penthouse apartment in False Creek hasn't collapsed on me 'ead.

Alternatively i'll run like the wind to my Father-In-Laws acreage near Maple Ridge and bask in the ocean front propertied delights.

My apologies for offending you in light of the awful catastrophe - wasn't my intention . However, I thought it odd that Canadians moan and start fear mongering about their own potential demise from a hypothetical earthquake when 50K+ Haitians were recently killed in a real earthquake.

A second irony is that Canadian (esp. QC ) media is all over this disaster as if Haiti and Canada have some long-established maternal tie. Perhaps there is a collective sense of guilt about Haiti - after all, we have let it rot away in our "own" Caribbean playground. Canadians, esp. in QC, have typically treated Haiti like shit - just glance at Le Journal de Montreal or Le Devoir to see the typical QC attitude to les negres-noirs Haitiens du region Pie IX. Pierre Cayoutte reveals this frame of mind when he reported [the collective reaction] to public actions of Gov.Gen. 27/05/2008)

Lastly, I seem not to remember whether our fickle media, nor my own sympathy, was so distraught and reactive when 100K+ died in the 2005 Kashmir earthquake (Currently, 125,000 persons of Pakistani origin live in Canada). This is perhaps a different issue - something to do with Islam?

I'll be okay as well in my two, 49 floor 23 bedroom gold plated penthouses, I'm spoilt for choice. In fact I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks - I wasn't overly offended, just thought the timing was a bit off.

I can't read french - but yes I agree. I was also offended by Canada's pitful offer of 5 million, I just hope that this was an initial gesture and more is to follow. My cheque will be in the mail by day's end.

Haiti is a french speaking island. There are many Haitian immigrants in Montreal. The GG is an immigrant from Haiti. Haiti was probably the most troubled country in the western hemisphere long before the quake. It is a third world country that is not equiped to deal with disasters.

There has been earthquake talk long before we came here. It has happened before and will happen again. Could be today, could be another 100 years. I have quake insurance, just in case though.

After a good old quake or tsunami it will be. Well, it would help with my inheritance if it happened
