Default For Piff Poff

And anyone else really. Here are the words that I saw on a calligraphy that I thought were some of the nicest I had heard of at a funeral.

Death is nothing at all
I have only slipped away into the next room
I am I and you are you
Whatever we were to each other
That we are still
Call me by my old familiar name
Speak to me in the easy way you always used
Put no difference into your tone
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow
Laugh as we always laughed
At the little jokes we always enjoyed together
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was
Let it be spoken without effort
Without the ghost of a shadow in it
Life means all that it ever meant
It is the same as it ever was
There is absolute unbroken continuity
What is death but a negligible accident?
Why should I be out of mind
Because I am out of sight?
I am waiting for you for an interval
Somewhere very near
Just around the corner
All is well.
Nothing is past; nothing is lost
One brief moment and all will be as it was before
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

Canon Henry Scott-Holland, 1847-1918, Canon of St Paul's Cathedral

'The King of Terrors', a sermon on death delivered in St Paul's Cathedral on Whitsunday 1910, while the body of King Edward VII was lying in state at Westminster:

Thank you Liz.

I hve chosen this one to go into the card for the flowers as it seems to sum up how I feel, I'm not in anyway religious but this seemed to make sense:

THE BROKEN CHAIN
We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name,
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.

You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

"Death is nothing at all" I remember from the movie "4 weddings and a Funeral"
Very moving.

Another thing I like is this:

"Death is but a horizon; and what is a horizon but the limit of our vision?"

Was that in Four Weddings too? I can only remember John Hannah's character reading Auden's "Funeral Blues." I'm not normally one to blub at movies, but I definitely had a catch in my throat at that.

i didn't know "Death is nothing at all." It's rather beautiful, Liz - thanks for posting. I particularly like "Whatever we were to each other / That we are still" and "Why should I be out of mind / Because I am out of sight?"

I am probably mistaken. I do know it though. Maybe it was a funeral I've been to?

Do n ot stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

And just reading that always makes me cry.

The nicest sentiment is that the person is with us even though they are gone. After all, memories last for ever.
