Going back to name-thing in Quebec I just wanted to check if I understood this right.....On marriage neither hubby nor wife change their last names, but the kids get double barrelled names?
So, in a few generations won't everyone in Quebec have extreeeeeeeemely long last names?
e.g.
Mr Jones marries Miss Smith, their kid is called Jane Smith-Jones
and
Mr Thomas marries Miss Peters, thier kid is called Paul Thomas-Peters.
Then
Jane Smith-Jones meets and marries Paul Thomas-Peters, they have a child called Sarah Smith-Jones-Thomas-Peters.
OMG!

That had been my impression also when they changed the law in the early eighties. However in practice I am told it works out that the kids will usually carry double-barreled names but it always stays at two. No geometric progression. Exactly how the mechanics work I do not know. The change in the law was stupid and unnecessary to begin with .. sadly enough the now under thirty crowd accept it as they have never known different.

Hm. Interesting. Last year, in Quebec, a young Sikh won a legal battle and he was finally allowed to carry a concealed weapon - a dagger - at school. Religious thingie, ya know. Initially, the school staff had said a dagger (religious symbol or not) has no place in a school; later, the Supreme Court decided he could merrily carry it around - it was a matter of religious freedom it seems.
So it goes, as one of my favourite authors used to say.

When we got married I was proud to take my husbands surname. Not just because of tradition but also my Christian views. When a man and woman marry they leave the family home and make a new family of their own and join as one union forsaking all others. With the man as the head of the family unit(from a Christian view) it is only right that the wife should take his name and not the other way roud. IMHO.

Anyway, just wanted you to know that. I am still all hyper from it. Go if you get a chance and any other Montrealers or visitors to this City.

So - things are still not perfect - but they are definitely better with regard to women in the workforce than they were 40 years ago.

[QUOTE=Beebop;5176664]
Hi all I usually hang out in other parts of the forums.
Just wanted to throw a wee spanner in the works.... "Christian Name" has not been used on forms in Australia for nearly 20 years. Im not a Christian, so how can I have a Christian name? Whenever Im asked this question - if I'm in the mood for some mischief
I just reply with "oh no, Im not a Christian".
I would also like to say that I could not forsee me ever taking anyone else's name, and I think that it's disgraceful that Quebecoises (is that the right word?) dont have the right to do so.

It clearly states in the Bible that the man is the head of the family and the wife - and the wife is to be in submission to her husband and the children in submission and obedience to their parents and this system does make for a happy home - but only if the father/husband is also a God fearing Christian and treats his wife with love and respect. It does not give a man the go ahead to be a bully in the home or to abuse his position as head. Hence the words to "love honour and obey" in marriage vows.
It is not saying that women are inferior, this is how God created the order of life, even in the animal kingdom, take a pack of wolves or dogs or lions, tigers etc etc the male is the dominant creature.
I also can respect women who dont agree with me as this is also their rightful choice in their own eyes.

I think my head is going to explode... and I'll pass on the religious discussion but....
For instance, you mention lions... our cultural notion of the male lion as 'king of the jungle' is just that; a cultural notion.... in reality, lions don't even live jungles, but savannas and it is the females who choose which male lions gets to be in the pride, it's the females who do most of the hunting, it's the females who decide which males she will mate with, it's the females who often expell any males from the pride when they're of no longer any use... the males donate sperm and provide territory security. And that is the same for a lot of species that organise themselves like that (one male, many females).
There are species where males dominate but it is not as widespread as many people assume it is.
I could say a lot more but I have boxes to pack.

.... your comments about the dominance of maleness in the animal world is not correct at all.
