Default Pay Canadaian speeding ticket with UK Chq?

Hello folks,

I need to pay for a $278 speeding ticket that i managed to get when i visited Winnipeg a couple of months back.

Winnipeg authorities will charge $15 if i pay by Card over the phone. I am back in the UK so paying in person is out of the question so i have decided to pay by chq instead.

What i need to know is whether its possible to write a cheque stating 278 dollars on a UK Barclays personal cheque.

Any help appreciated.

No, you'd need to get a draft in Canadian from your bank - they'll probably charge you about a tenner for this, so probably easier to just bite the bullet and pay on card...

It would even be difficult if your account was a dollar account.

A couple of months back that would've been ~137 pounds, today it's ~154 pounds. And you're worrying about $15?

Thanks for the pointers.

I was aware that it was costing me more now than if i'd had time to pay while i was there, which is why i thought i'd save a few quid.

Was made redundant just before xmas so i keep trying to justify saving a few quid here and there....

Just paid the fine over the phone as per your advice and total cost came to $293.03 :curse:next time i'll drive slower.

Cheers for the help.

p.s. are those radar detectors available in Canada?

I was told by the officer that as we live outside Canada i don't have to pay it but there would be a warrant issued and that I would be arrested upon my return.

Seeing that we are looking to eventually move to Canada we thought it better that it was paid.

Sorry to hear about redundancy. I wouldn't have been so flippant if I'd known that. BTW, which license were you driving on in Manitoba? (i.e. UK or local?).

In Ontario, I've not heard of an arrest warrant being issued for non-payment of a speeding fine. Usually they just suspend the license until payment is received and slap on an additional $150 to reactivate it. Difficult to see how they could do that for a UK license.

It might be different in Manitoba or the cop might have been using a scare tactic.

It may have been a scare tactic, I thought about not paying it myself but didn't want to chance it for when we put our Visa application in.

The only way i could see that the warrant could be enforced is if my name was given to passport control and I was arrested upon landing on Candian soil.

I think you do have to fill a form in stating where you'll be residing while visiting / holidaying in Canada, this is handed in at passport control.

Perhaps you get a knock on the door in the middle of the night!

hehe Well done for getting a ticket!!!

Was it on the drive out to grand beach or the city?

I have yet to get a speeding ticket here but my wife managed to get one on the day that we purchased a new car...Whats funny is she is a very slow driver and never speeds but the difference in between that cars was so great that she managed to get up to 70K/ph just by turning onto mcgregor it cost us around $300.

What is your news regarding the move anyway? it's been a long time since i've seen a post from you.

How you doing, well i hope.

Yeh it was on the way to Grand Beach, near a Casino and a school. I was doing 103 in an 80 zone, go figure!

Anyway, he was parked on the other side and clocked me as i passed. He said the fine could have been $1400 given that i was speeding near a school. I didn't even know there was a school there until he pointed it out.

Gave it a couple of weeks when we got back and then started to collate all the documents we needed for the application. Took 4 weeks just to get the wifes uni transcript!

Hopefully we'll be in a position to post everything off by end of next week.

I was made redundant just before Xmas and things are looking pretty dire at the moment, too few jobs and too many applicants. Really driving the price down of any Temp work. Redundancy should see me good for about 7mths but i'll land something before then.

So between sorting documents and looking for work i've not really been on the site.

We put the house up for sale as soon as we got back but its not going to be easy shifting it in the current climate and we'll probably take a hammering on the price when we do!

I'm hoping everything will be sorted within the next 12-14mths. It'll make it easier to settle in if we ship over after the snow.

How are you enjoying the weather there, i heard you've had some record breaking temperatures again ?

Yeah it's been lovely and hot for this time of year lol.

I moved in the winter and to be honest by the time you feel settled it is the summer so it's actually a pretty good time to move!!!

I'm sorry to hear of your redundancy...but on the positive side winnipegs economy is actually looking pretty good right now there have been a few closures of stores but not many.

It's the advantage of living away from the hustle of the stock exchange i guess.

Seriously about the winter though it is damn cold...they say it should get warmer in a couple of weeks which will be a welcome respite i guess but heres the thing, you don't know you got something good until you get something bad so i suppose it's a blessing in a way...
