Next question. Can anyone recommend a good hotel in Paris. I would like it to be near Gare du Nord because we are taking Eurostar. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I would pay for something decent. It has to have a private bathroom. I am not sharing a bathroom with strangers.
My granddaughter and I are staying with my sister and we were hoping that she and her granddaughter would come with us for company. But she doesn't want to spend the money. She has plenty of money, but she says she has been before.
I sometimes find Brits (and I know I am one too) are not nearly so hospitable as Prairie folk. If they ever came here (which they won't) I would be willing to go anywhere with them.
Still, Alyssa and I will be fine on our own.

In September we stayed at the Hotel Ibis Paris Jemmapes 10 eme. It was 75 Euros a night. The hotel was nothing special (probably because it was the cheapest I could find), but you don't go to Paris to sit in a hotel room. It was convenient as we arrived at the Gard du Nord, and left from the Gare de L'est. It is within a fair walking distance of the city centre.

Would you likewise pay to accompany her to Vancouver or Toronto for a weekend? I don't mind taking people around my home area or a few hours out. Don't think I could afford to join them on a 3 hour plane ride for a quick jaunt ...

I probably wouldn't fly, but I would take the car and drive her Vancouver. Would not consider driving to Toronto though.
When you said you left from Gare de l"Est. I am curious about that. Does Eurostar go to and from Gare du Nord. I was just wondering as you left from a different station.

Why don't you ask in the France Forum?
In fact, I usually go to an Ibis when I go to Paris and if no one can put me up. Go on the "Accor Hotels" website for the addresses - there's at least one near the Gare du Nord.
Bon voyage!

It can be expensive...but there is so much available on foot and that cuts down on expenses.
If the weather's good, buy a baguette for lunch and go sit in a park...excellent value.
I remember one of the cheapest places for food and drink was actually up the Eiffel Tower. I had a tray of chips and a beer from the snack bar - dirt cheap.
But a small glass of beer with a meal in an average restaurant? Two small glasses was the same price as the bloody food.

We went to Les Deux Magots (famous Cafe) and people were waiting for tables even though there were plenty in cafes just yards away. Mid croque-monsieur (about 6 quid in 1994
) I suddenly noticed Emmanuelle Béart getting served.

The Eurostar arrives and leaves from the Gard du Nord. We were travelling the next day to Rheims on the TGV to meet my sister.

Well, I haven't been to Paris since I was a teenager. I just thought that even though they have been there before, they might want to come along. I have been to Vancouver lots of times, but if I had relatives coming, I would love to go again! I can't imagine if you went to Paris once a year, you would be fed up with it.
Still, I have found that before. If I go to England again in the future I think I will go somewhere I haven't been and stay in a hotel. I just found it disappointing when you stay with them and whenever I suggest they might want to do something with us -- oh no - they have done that before.

They have seen all the shows in London - so they could come to London with us, but they wouldn't want to see a show again like Lion King -- even though they haven't been for 10 years.
(sorry if you note a touch of sarcasm there!)

And really I would not stay near the Gare de Nord, look around at other areas, maybe somewhere near the Eiffel Tower, it depends on what you want from the trip. Train stations are never the best areas.
Seriously the metro is easy to use and cheapish but the drawback is the walking at certain stations and there are hardly any lift/elevators.
Beware though, the biggest negative is the exchange rate, it really hurt when we were there in December. For example a kids meal is around 12 euros on average which is $16!!! Extortion!
