Pancake Day

Is anybody going to make pancakes tomorrow? I think I'm going to give them a ago this year, but proper ones not the horrible American style ones.

I can't be arsed myself, but is anyone giving anything up for Lent?

Re: Pancake Day

I made some 'proper' pancakes not so long back (as opposed to the packet mixed butter and maple syrup covered ones that we normally have for breakfast). Complete with lemon juice and sugar on the table.

You should have seen the look on hubby and his sons face - it was like I was asking them to eat their own grandparents.

Proper pancakes . I'll be making those with the lemon juice and sugar too. The problem is the husband. He can eat as many as I can make. I have to hide mine in the warmer.

Our pancake day gets rolled over to Wednesday as it's Parade night at cadets on Tuesday.

Proper ones, lemon and sugar.

Golden syrup???

Do you put that in the batter or on the pancakes? Whose tradition is that? Because I've never come across it before.

I make a batter from milk, butter flour and eggs, and serve the pancakes with castor sugar and lemon juice.

I'd forgotten it was Shrove Tuesday tomorrow. Just checked my eggs in the fridge and they had to be eaten by Saturday. Oops....made a batch of fluffy American style pancakes yesterday for breakfast and nobody was sick, suppose I had better get some fresh eggs in the morning.;)

Lemon juice and caster sugar is the only way to eat proper pancakes :D

I was born on Pancake Day. My dad and brothers never forgave me (they didn't get their pancakes that year).

You serve it on the pancakes.

It was always tradition round our way...and a pretty damn good one! And yes I'll be making the proper ones and not the weird massive ones!

Yip we are having proper pancakes with cinnamon sugar (South African tradition), I will open a can (or tin, don't know which is the correct word ) of peaches, and whisked up fresh cream to have it with the pancakes too.

Re: Pancake Day

I had no idea that there was a north-south divide in the pancake tradition. I wonder where the cut off point is. Is golden syrup with pancakes contiguous with the Pork-pie and Tunis cake at Christmas zone, I wonder, or is it further north, into the salty porridge and IrnBru zone?

I was born and raised on the Isle of Wight and we put goldon syrup on our pancakes. I suspect the divide is more stuck up/each to their own than north/south. Perhaps we could look at accents and, maybe, those with RP accents would prefer lemon and sugar, while the rest would prefer whatever tastes good.:p

Our family grew up on lemon/sugar and we didn't have RP accents. The pancakes and their toppings are quite a contrast to the stuff sold at IHOP and other breakfast places here in Canada. Most Canadians find the pancakes discussed on this forum to be very similar to crepes.

They are. What we describe as a pancake is a crepe. What Canadians describe as a pancake is closer to a dropped scone.

I've never eaten a Canadian pancake, but my mother used to make "Scotch pancakes", which were thicker and smaller than a usual pancake, and we used to eat them with syrup, but never on pancake day.

Yes, I'd already got the impression you are quite confused, 4Bells. Have you considered seeking treatment?

Re: Pancake Day

I'll be making pancakes, lemon & sugar, syrup or apple cinnamon, its all good chez mois.

My wife makes the best thick fluffy north american style blueberry pancakes, but for "proper" crepe style thin ones, she passes the responsibility to me. My kids dont care either way.

I dont get the hostility to thick pancakes though (unless you are doing them wrong?), to be honest Ive never met a pancake that I didnt like.

As for lent, I imagine the catholic contingent under my roof will be giving up something, no idea what though.

Did yorkshire pudding on Saturday with the roast. On the barbeque naturally:unsure:

Just had 'em for pud. Filled with nutella and chopped banana, for the extra indulgence, add a little honey.
