Our first few days
#1
After arriving on Saturday we spent the remainder of the day with OH cousins catching up on news and generally getting to know each other - OH hasn't seen them for many years and I it was the first time for me.
Sunday we got up early as the 5 hour time difference had us waking at 5 am with body clocks convinced breakfast was due.
Breakfast was a brunch at another cousins home further North of Toronto followed by a day of driving around to see the different neighbourhoods of Toronto - areas we will be visiting again in our search for a home.
Monday morning saw us heading out with a long list of things to accomplish. We did very well thanks to the efficiency of the Canadians we encountered. We checked out the cattery where our cats will be from tomorrow afternoon after they arrive from Heathrow - fab place. Then we got our new Cell phone sim cards for our existing phones which we had unlocked. We elected to take Rogers pay-as-you-go cards for now, although we were offered a contract just needed photo ID (passport) and a credit card - how easy! The chap who helped us was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. Would recommend him.
Then off to register for Social Security cards - took all of 6 minutes!!! Friendly, helpful and efficient.
Then off to register for OHIP (health insurance), here we hit a problem as we have no proof of address, which we will sort in due course. At the same place was the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) so we exchanged our British licences for Ontario ones - again friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. After a 15 minute wait we were seen and 10 minutes later we had our temporary licence with the licence card to be mailed in 4 weeks. We now have proof of address. As it was by this time the end of the day we headed home. We will go back today to register for OHIP with our proof of address.
While waiting our turn at the DMV time was well spent making a dinner date with our first new Toronto friends - a couple from BE who moved here almost 2 months ago. We went to great place on Front Street where we had wonderful Ribs - yum yum. Thoroughly recommend Baton Rouge on Front Street if you are ever in need of a good ribbing.
So I think a very productive day and we got way more done than we imagined we might.
So far we are loving Toronto.

Thank you!
We got registered for OHIP yesterday using Temp drivers licence as proof of address.

That was a good tip I got here on BE, so thanks to whoever posted that.
